His singing and dancing received rave reviews. The success provided him the opportunity to sign a 5 year contract with MGM. His next immiediate release was The House I Live In, he appeared only for 10 mins. That movie won a Special Academy Award. His following movies made critics sit up and notice and appreaciate his acting skills. Frank Sinatra was very comforable and was at ease in front of the camera.
As all other actors Frank had is fair share of flops and hits. Sinatra wanted to experiment new roles and did the role of a priest in the movie The Miracle of the Bells, which bombed. His other musicial movies like The Kissing Bandit was a box office dud. By then Sinatra was facing marital problems, fatigue and constant bad press. Sintra direction was credited but the movie was not a success. Another notable movie was The Manchurian Candidate, Sintra was praised for his acting. The central concept of the film is that the son of a prominent, right-wing political family has been brainwashed as an unwitting assassin for an international Communist conspiracy. The Manchurian Candidate was nationally released on Wednesday, October 24, 1962, at the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis . During the fight scene between Frank Sinatra and Henry Silva , Sinatra broke his hand during a movement where he smashed through a table. This resulted in problems with his hand/fingers for several years and is said to be one of the reasons why he pulled out of a starring role in Dirty Harry , having to undertake surgery to alleviate pains. This film was withdrew after the first few months after it released as President Kennedy was shot and killed in Dallas. Sintara continued his passion for war movies, He further acted in movies like Von Ryan Express and more. His movies were slowly loosing their charm at the box office. During this rough patch Warner Bros signed him for their last colloboration. His next venture The Detective was a box office success, becoming the 20th highest earning film of the year with $6.5 million taken in box office rentals. Critical reception was mostly good whilst Sinatra delivered one of his most intense and dedicated acting performances. At the age of 55 Sinatra announced that his last film was Dirty Dingus Magee. He expected it to a hit to a movie for all to remember but the movie failed miserably. Though there was constant calls for him to return back to the screen, Sinatra finally said yes after seven years to a three hour television film produced by him. Critics welcomed him back. His next screen apperance in a leading role the last was The First Deadly Sin. The First Deadly Sin failed to make much of an impression at the box office. Four years later in appeared himself in Burt Reynolds Cannonball Run II.
Hin career over 40 yrs Sinatra had the charisma to pull the crowd. He memerised many with his acting and singing. Despite acting in more than 50 films, only a handful of the movies were appreciated by the critics. Sinatra only directed once and produced about 6-7 films. Other than films he continued to appear in many Televison series and documents. He acted in 3 Television films and one was his own production. It is interesting to note for his earlier movies, he played a shy and timid role where the his female character will a strong lady who had to teach him about love. Sinatra moved away from these roles and took up more challenging roles and proved himself. Often he was criticised for his temper in filming was he hatred rehearsals and retakes. He was more natural performer as he was able to creep into the characters of his movies.
