Interview with: Mike Doyle,
President & Chief Executive Officer,
QPID Health, Inc.
“Electronic Health Records (EHRs) were
expected to solve a number of pain
points in healthcare organizations but
their full promise has not yet been
fulfilled. EHRs have slowed down
physicians and hospitals have not seen
a return on a costly investment,” Mike
Doyle, President & Chief Executive
Officer, QPID Health, believes.
Doyle likens the current state of EHRs to
the Internet 20 years ago before
Google. “EHRs are necessary, but not
sufficient. They have a lot of data, but it
is hard to find and even harder to apply
in the clinical trench. Today’s EHRs have
created an opportunity for Chief
Medical Information Officers
(CMIOs) to take the lead in helping
organizations get more value out of the
data they hold,” he suggests.

Now that EHR systems have been
deployed, how can organizations
extract clinical and fiscal ROI?
Organizations have the data they need,
in both structured and unstructured
form. But unfortunately a lot of data
sits unutilized. The data must be
delivered at the optimal time in the
clinical workflow for clinicians to make
the best care decisions possible and
ensure optimal patient outcomes.
What is the necessary next step
with EHRs? How can clinical
intelligence be activated?
Physicians often times do not have time
to read the entire patient record. Acute
or complex patients have tons of
information in their records! The sheer
volume and the fact that information is
distributed throughout the record makes
it really tough for physicians to see the
relevant parts needed to make a proper
clinical decision.
QPID activates clinical intelligence,
which allows physicians to use their best
judgment with the best information
possible. This benefits the patient, the
institution and payers.
How would QPID boost clinician
productivity and profitability?
QPID improves clinical throughput by at
least 10-15 percent because it matches
the way clinicians think, delivering all
the associated information related to a
diagnosis such as symptoms and lab
results.
Most hospital outpatient appointments
are scheduled in 30-minute time slots.
It used to take physicians ten minutes
to prep for a patient visit, ten to
examine and ten to document the visit.
With QPID it takes two minutes to
understand what is going on with the
patient, so they need just 22 minutes
for the appointment. From a productiv-
ity standpoint, this means physicians
can see more people every day or spend
the extra time with their patients.
The technology is able to catch potential
issues in advance, going into the
patient’s record in advance of a
procedure, such as a colonoscopy or
MRI, to look for risk factors. If the
patient is on blood thinners or has sleep
apnea, the nurse is alerted that the
patient should discontinue the medica-
tion or change to a different type of
anesthesia. This can avoid unnecessary
cancellations and improve patient safety
and satisfaction.
Activating clinical intelligence can also
avoid redundant diagnostic procedures.
There are countless reports of a
physician ordering a repeat test because
he or she was unaware it had been
ordered previously. Insurance compa-
nies do not necessarily pay for the
second test, so there is a revenue
impact as well as the inconvenience to
the patient. This can be avoided if the
relevant test results are automatically
brought in front of the physician.

The creation of the CMIO role was a
necessary first step to bridge knowledge
transfer between the technical and
clinical sides of a hospital.
Going forward, CMIOs have a great
opportunity to lead their organizations
in maximizing the value of EHRs. There
is an opportunity to generate return on
the investment, increase patient safety,
improve practitioner satisfaction, and
reduce costs within the institution.

How to Extract More Value from Electronic Health Records - Mike Doyle, QPID Health, Inc.

Interview with: Mike Doyle, President & Chief Executive Officer, QPID Health, Inc. “Electronic Health Records (EHRs) were expected to solve a number of pain points in healthcare organizations but their full promise has not yet been fulfilled. EHRs have slowed down physicians and hospitals have not seen a return on a costly investment,” Mike Doyle, President & Chief Executive Officer, QPID Health, believes. Doyle likens the current state of EHRs to the Internet 20 years ago before Google. “EHRs are necessary, but not sufficient. They have a lot of data, but it is hard to find and even harder to apply in the clinical trench. Today’s EHRs have created an opportunity for Chief Medical Information Officers (CMIOs) to take the lead in helping organizations get more value out of the data they hold,” he suggests. Now that EHR systems have been deployed, how can organizations extract clinical and fiscal ROI? Organizations have the data they need, in both structured and unstructured form. But unfortunately a lot of data sits unutilized. The data must be delivered at the optimal time in the clinical workflow for clinicians to make the best care decisions possible and ensure optimal patient outcomes. What is the necessary next step with EHRs? How can clinical intelligence be activated? Physicians often times do not have time to read the entire patient record. Acute or complex patients have tons of information in their records! The sheer volume and the fact that information is distributed throughout the record makes it really tough for physicians to see the relevant parts needed to make a proper clinical decision. QPID activates clinical intelligence, which allows physicians to use their best judgment with the best information possible. This benefits the patient, the institution and payers. How would QPID boost clinician productivity and profitability? QPID improves clinical throughput by at least 10-15 percent because it matches the way clinicians think, delivering all the associated information related to a diagnosis such as symptoms and lab results. Most hospital outpatient appointments are scheduled in 30-minute time slots. It used to take physicians ten minutes to prep for a patient visit, ten to examine and ten to document the visit. With QPID it takes two minutes to understand what is going on with the patient, so they need just 22 minutes for the appointment. From a productiv- ity standpoint, this means physicians can see more people every day or spend the extra time with their patients. The technology is able to catch potential issues in advance, going into the patient’s record in advance of a procedure, such as a colonoscopy or MRI, to look for risk factors. If the patient is on blood thinners or has sleep apnea, the nurse is alerted that the patient should discontinue the medica- tion or change to a different type of anesthesia. This can avoid unnecessary cancellations and improve patient safety and satisfaction. Activating clinical intelligence can also avoid redundant diagnostic procedures. There are countless reports of a physician ordering a repeat test because he or she was unaware it had been ordered previously. Insurance compa- nies do not necessarily pay for the second test, so there is a revenue impact as well as the inconvenience to the patient. This can be avoided if the relevant test results are automatically brought in front of the physician. Any final comments? The creation of the CMIO role was a necessary first step to bridge knowledge transfer between the technical and clinical sides of a hospital. Going forward, CMIOs have a great opportunity to lead their organizations in maximizing the value of EHRs. There is an opportunity to generate return on the investment, increase patient safety, improve practitioner satisfaction, and reduce costs within the institution.
