1. Digital Can Now Be Directional
The world of the hearing aid has gone
digital, and because of it, some extra
special features are offered on a few
models. If you have heard of dual
microphones but aren’t quite sure that
means, talking to a hearing aid provider
will help clarify it. Otherwise, read on.
Dual microphones as they are installed
with digital hearing aids are an effective means at background noise
reduction and a focused increase in the sounds or voices people want to
hear. Approximately thirty-six percent of all hearing aids now are equipped
with dual microphones, and most patients with a moderate to severe hearing
loss prefer them over hearing aids with singular microphones. With the
digital applications guiding the dual microphones, the hearing aids can also
now adjust themselves to hear what the patient wants to hear and actually
records those hearing preferences so as to engage those same situations
with consistency and clarity later on.
The dual microphones have the added benefit in some models of identifying
the source(s) of the interfering sounds and kill it altogether. This is
especially helpful when the interference is painfully loud or uncomfortable.
While not all models are digital, audio controls on manual and traditional
models still allow for dual microphones to be built in and used. This
particular bit of hearing aid technology was the result of an observant
hearing aid developer who realized that directional microphones for public
speaking would also benefit the hard of hearing. Adapting the dual
microphone system for hearing aids was a little trickier as it had to be built
smaller and more compact. As the technology and design for hearing aids
advanced to the point where microphone systems could be built to fit, this
innovative idea from the ’70’s became a tangible reality.
