Ethics Essay
My parents have taught me many things in life and to realize what the right and wrong
thing is to do when it comes to certain situations. I have been taught to not do something
especially if it is illegal or could end with trouble in the law. I have chosen to be smart about
things and not do any activities that could potentially cause trouble because before I do
something I think of all the consequences that could develop. I have been taught that you will be
much more successful in life if you choose to do the right thing and not always jump on the
bandwagon of what all your friends are doing because they think it’s cool. If you stay true to
yourself you will know to make the right decisions and avoid the wrong ones. If it weren’t for
my parents raising me with good ethics, I don’t know who I would be today.
At my job we all try to take care of each other because not only is it a place of co-
workers, it is also another family. We always try to help one another out and avoid being
disrespectful to each other, even if we are joking around. The number one rule at my work would
have to be honesty because we are always dealing with money, especially since I am the one
with access to the drawer. It is important at my job to show fairness to everyone because each of
us have bills to pay and need money, we can’t be selfish and think about ourselves. In order to
keep up with the restaurant we must do our job, not make others push us to do our job. Showing
up on time and being prepared is what will keep the business running successfully.
There are many examples of situations that require use of our ethics every day. First,
dealing with money and the drawer is very important. You must be trusted to have access to the
drawer and ensure customers that you are giving them the right change. If anyone attempts to
2. steal from the drawer, not only are they fired but they could also face criminal charges.
Secondly, goofing around at the restaurant during a busy rush is something that should not
happen. Waitresses are rushing around carrying drinks and hot food and goofing around could
possible cause harm to someone. Not only would you be fired but you could seriously hurt
someone if you slip and fall or spill hot food on someone. Lastly, it is necessary that you be
respectful to all of the customers. Not doing so could cause customers not only to be unhappy
with their experience but also result in a bad reputation for the business and anyone that has the
effect on customers should be fired.
I believe everyone at my work site is ethical, even though sometimes the cooks can get a
little upset about waitresses messing up orders and having to remake food. There have been a
few times where the cooks have gone overboard but the manager has been there to calm them
down. Usually our customers are delightful and sweet, but every now and again there will be
some old ones that just never seem happy, so when it comes to a time like that all you can do is
smile. If a customer’s experience has been great they will be sure to tell us all about it, but if a
customer’s experience has not been so great, they will not only be sure to tell the waitress and
manager, but also every other person in the restaurant.
Being ethical and making right decisions can guarantee many more happy moments then
bad. Treating people with respect and being honest will definitely get you farther in life as well
as being a mature young adult in the decisions you make. Even if you are having a bad day try
not to being your negative energy into the work place because that could potentially cause
problems with not only your co workers but also with customers. If you ever get in a position
where you can’t decide what to do, be sure to use what you’ve been taught and try to end things
in a positive manner.
