2. Research Topic: Lacking Knowledge of Historical Building In New
Urbanization
Background
What is historical?
Historical means something from the past. historical came from the word
history. History is the discovery, collection, organization, and presentation of
information about past events. History can also mean the period of time after
writing was invented. It is a field of research which uses a narrative to examine
and analyse the sequence of events, and it sometimes attempts to investigate
objectively the patterns of cause and effect that determine events.
What is building?
Building means any human made structure used or intended for supporting or
sheltering any use or continuous occupancy. Buildings come in a wide amount
of shapes and functions, and have been adapted throughout history for a wide
number of factors, from building materials available, to weather conditions, to
land prices, ground conditions, specific uses and aesthetic reasons. Buildings
serve several needs of society – primarily as shelter from weather and as general
living space, to provide privacy, to store belongings and to comfortably live and
work.
3. Problem Identification
People nowadays do not knowledge and appreciate the historical value of a
historical building.
Aim & Objectives
To provide information about a historical building.
To help people to understand more about historical building.
To encourage people to learn more about historical building in an developing
urban city.
To educate people to appreciate an art and architecture of a historical building.
Motivation
I myself lack of knowledge about any historical building. So from this project I
hope I could understand more about a certain historical building.
Only know a big, tall and nice building in a developing urban city. For example
KLCC.

4. RESEARCH OF THE MOSQUE
The Kapitan Keling Mosque is the largest historic mosque in Penang located along Jalan
Masjid Kapitan Keling. It was first built by the east India Company troops when they
arrived in Penang towards the end of the 18th century.
Caudeer Mohudeen was the Kapitan Keling (headman) at that time applied for a land
grant as a larger and more permanent mosque was necessary. In 1801 the East India
company granted 18 acres of land where builders and materials from India was brought
to construct the mosque. After Caudeer Mohudeen’s death in 1834, part of the land was
taken to build public roads and houses were built around the mosque, slowly reducing its
area to 8 acres in 1903. The present mosque was built in 1916 replacing the old building
and its dome shaped minaret reflects Islamic architecture with Indian influence.
The Kapitan Keling Mosque is a place of worship of the Indian Muslim community who
have lived and worked around the mosque with a continuous history of over two hundred
years.
5. Video Projection Mapping is an exciting new projection technique that can
turn almost any surface into a dynamic video display. Projection mapping
techniques allow us to paint real world using a simple video projector.
Specialized software is used to warp and mask the projected image to make
it fit perfectly on irregularly shaped screens. With a single projector
connected to a laptop, we can project our video, images, colors to
differently oriented surfaces and compensate projection distortion using
deformable quads that can be adjusted directly on the screen by simply
dragging their corners. When done right, the end result is a dynamic
projection installation that transcends ordinary video projection.
6. Research Issue
In our society we are lack of knowledge on a certain historical
building. Youngsters only know new architecture building such as
condominium and KLCC. They lack of knowledge of old design architecture
in this new era of urbanization. Nice and tall buildings only build in developing
urban areas. So they only notice what do they see. An approach should be done
to attract more people to appreciate a historical building. A certain historical
building architechture got its own sentimental value and should be appreciated
by us in this new developing era of urbanization.
Methodology
Gathering data from internet sources, journals, magazine and newspaper

7. For the final project, I decided to do projection mapping on the miniature
that involves projecting video/visual from the projector to the stage area.
The idea, technically, is about the projection mapping of a historical building
in Penang. Miniature used as for replacing the actual mosque. The mosque
miniature will become the actual Kapitan Keling Mosque that tell us how
important preserving a historical building. As the mapping goes, it projected
visual/video to the miniature.

11. Social Context
-Lacking know knowledge of historical building in a social community.
-What do people think about historical building
Historical Context
-Development of historical building and new building.
-How a certain shape of a building in 50 years back and nowadays.

This is the screen shot of my video since I cant upload it in here.
14. Media Type : Animation and Video
Estimated Scenes : 5
Estimated Timeline : 5 minutes
15. Software used
In order to generate, edit and publish the content of
the visual needed for projection, I will be using a few
software :
Video and animation
-Adobe Flash
-Adobe Premiere Pro
-Adobe After Effect
-Adobe Soundbooth
Projection Mapping
-TextMachine 3D
-MadMapper

This is a projection mapping installation art that showcases architecture, art
craft, historical value and environment of the Kapitan Keling Mosque. It
involves a high quality projector that project visual and video to the miniature
that have been setup to the stage. The miniature represent the actual Kapitan
Keling Mosque.
The purpose of this projection mapping art is to invite people to gain
knowledge and history of architecture and historical value of a certain historic
building. The miniature will be the main subject for audience to focus as the
montage starts to project on the stage. The projector will be projecting multiple
video and visual on the miniature accompanied by background music.
