This document provides information about the Core Course Week for architecture students at DIS in Western Denmark during spring 2014. The week focuses on studying daylight through visits to sites in Copenhagen from Monday to Wednesday and a three-day study tour of locations in Western Denmark from Thursday to Saturday. Students are divided into groups that will analyze daylight together at churches and museums in Copenhagen, then review their observation journals. The document outlines the schedule, objectives to understand architecture through daylight parameters, and practical information for the study tour.

Core Course Week Philosophy
The core of your studies in the Architecture and Design Programs
at DIS is the studio. The core course week is a full week of studies
meant to contribute to the advancement of your architectural
understanding and your studio work through a dedicated focus
on a key element in architecture and design: daylight.
Daylight is a key element in most architectural cultures, but
nowhere more so than in the Nordic countries:
“Extreme variations of climate and sun have produced unique
conditions of light throughout Scandinavia. The seasons present
astonishing swings of illumination. The long, cold winter is dark
and gloomy, with the sun barely appearing at all, and when it
does, rising and setting for the briefest of times. Night-time
permeates into the day to cloak the land in perpetual shade. And
during the ecstatic yet fleeting summer, nights are pervaded
by the midnight sun producing almost too much light and
concentrating the annual light-fall into several months.” (Henry
Plummer, Nordic Light – see required reading).
The core course week should be understood as a continuous
and cohesive activity focusing on the architecture and design
disciplines and daylight. From Monday to Wednesday we will be
working in Copenhagen, learning about and studying daylight in
different locations and situations. From Thursday to Saturday
we will go on the first study tour of the semester that takes us to
different locations Western Denmark.
The study tour will focus on the context of Denmark outside the
Copenhagen capital region. The three-day tour will include visits
to both contemporary and historical sites on the island of Fyn
and in Jylland. The study tour is intended to illustrate and expand
upon the core course week theme of architectural understanding
and daylight, to provide inspiration for your studio work, and
to enable an in-depth understanding of significant works of
architecture in Denmark
The Core Course Week objectives will be achieved by:
• personal exploration and on-site analysis in the form of
visual note-taking
• on-site discussions with faculty and fellow students
• post-visit reflection with your study tour groups.

8. DIS Architecture + Design Spring 2014
Daylight Studies
“Daylight is constantly changing. (Other) elements of
architecture (…) can be exactly determined. The architect can
fix the dimensions of solids and cavities, he can designate the
orientation of his building, he can specify the materials and
the way they are to be treated; he can describe precisely the
quantities and qualities he desires in his building before a stone
has been laid. Daylight alone he cannot control. It changes from
morning to evening, from day to day, both in intensity and color.
How is it possible to work with such a capricious factor? How can
it be utilized artistically?” (Steen Eiler Rasmussen, Experiencing
Architecture – see required reading).
Danish medieval church
In the Nordic countries the daylight has extreme variations with
few hours of daylight in the winter and few hours of darkness in
the summer. Denmark is situated at 56° north latitude. The solar
height at max is 57,5° and at min 10,5°. On average there is direct
sunlight 1/3 of the daylight hours and ambient daylight for 2/3 of
the daylight hours.
We will use the core course week to enhance our understanding
of architecture through studies of daylight in a series of different
locations. At the sites we will study the parameters of daylight:
Hallandgård
• the direct sunlight
• the ambient daylight
• the reflected light
Pay attention to:
• the level of light,
• the geographic orientation of the aperture / building
• the distribution of light in the space
• the shadows, reflections, and glare
• the color of light and shadows

Record the observations in your journals
Draw and write notes, which capture the qualities of daylighting
in the spaces you visit and describe the atmosphere it creates.
It is important that you are able to describe your observations
to your classmates through visual and written notes. It is
important to share your learning with fellow students to enhance
everyone’s understanding of architecture.

Practical Information
Packing + Apparel
Be sure to pack light! Apparel and packing suggestions are as
follows:
•
Sturdy, comfortable boots or shoes for walking
•
Layered clothing for cold temperatures
•
A waterproof rainshell/jacket or umbrella
•
Please also pack a bathing suit and towel for taking advantage
of various swimming opportunities
•
You must bring a time telling device! (ex: wrist watch, alarm
clock, cell phone)
Meals
Make sure you bring a lunch pack for the first day on the bus! Your
tour book will clearly state which meals are covered by DIS, and
which meals you are responsible for covering on your own. DIS will
provide two meals per day.
Money
You will need to bring your own Danish kroner for drinks, meals,
snacks, evenings out, Danish souvenirs, and anything else that you
would like. Please keep in mind that no stops have been scheduled
for the bank or money exchange. Since most of this tour is spent in
the countryside, ATMs will not be easy to find.
Accommodations
On both Thursday and Friday nights we will be staying at youth
hostels. These hostels will only provide pillows and comforters for
your bed, so please bring the following: a dynebetræk [comforter
cover], a pudebetræk [pillow case], a flat bottom sheet, towel,
alarm clock, and toiletries, etc. Students who do not bring a
comforter cover, flat sheet and pillow case will be required to
rent them from the youth hostel at their own expense.

Guide to Visual Note-Taking
The following categories are broad and you need to consider
which apply in the case of each location you analyze. For each
location choose 4-5 categories to focus, and touch briefly upon
the remaining categories. All drawing types are suggestions and
must be supplemented by written notes.
Site: illustration that captures the essence of site and
surroundings. Use drawings such as: plans, section of open space
around the building, or quick serial visions.
Concept: conceptual drawing that illustrates the main idea. Use
drawings such as: diagrams in plan, section, elevation, axon.
Context: illustration of what surrounds the building and possibly
how this has influenced the design. Use drawings such as:
sketches of details, concepts of surroundings, quick diagrammatic
perspectives (serial vision), plan.
Sequence: description of the sequence of space that the user of
the building experiences. Use drawings such as: diagrammatic
axon, quick diagrammatic perspectives (serial vision).
Structure: conceptual drawing showing the structural main idea.
Do any of the structural choices relate back to the context? Use
drawings such as: diagrammatic plans, sections, exploded axon,
detail sketches.
Space: description of the main spatial quality of the building. Use
drawings such as: sections, perspectives.
Skin: description of the skin of the project. How has the
surrounding context influenced the choice of material of the
facades? Use drawings such as: details shown in section, axon,
sketch perspectives.
Detail: Description of how building components/ materials are
put together. Use drawings such as: axon of detail, section, plan.
16
Material: Various materials can be used to differentiate or define
an idea graphically. Document how different materials can
influence ones visual understanding of a space.
