  1. het verschil tussen een incentive en een mechanisme is dus dat een mechanisme meer een beschrijvende of verklarende functie heeft, en uitlegt waarom iets gebeurt, en een incentive meer een instrumentele functie, en bepaalde sociale mechanismen kan aanboren.
  2. Waarom gaan we in op mechanismen en incentives binnen een community? Online communities worden gedragen door de gebruikers. Het is daarom erg belangrijk om van hen uit te gaan in het ontwerp van een omgeving. Wij proberen een duurzame omgeving te ontwikkelen, en daarbij is het handig om te leren van eerdere initiatieven.

Omdat het succes van communities afhangt van vrijwillige bijdragen van haar leden, moet het duidelijk zijn voor alle relevante actoren wat de waarde is van bijdragen, zowel persoonlijk, als voor de community als geheel. Deze waarde kan ook heel goed liggen in het ontdekken van nieuwe mensen of dingen, of het leren van nieuwe vaardigheden. De waarde om iets te doen moet ook duidelijk zijn, zoals bij LinkedIn wordt laten zien dat een beter ingevuld profiel leidt tot een grotere kans om ontdekt te worden.
  10. Draag zorg voor het feit dat er comfort en herkenning is (eigen pagina bijvoorbeeld), maar ook nieuwsitems, aankondigingen, etc. Is de omgeving volgens verwachting, komen de sociale patronen overeen met de realiteit? Kun je iets waarderen, informatie of personen weigeren, etc.
  11. Ritme creëren houdt in dat elke community moet uitvinden wanneer, in welke frequentie en op welke manier er communicatie plaatsvindt (bijvoorbeeld nieuwsbrieven, events, etc.). muziekplaatje

Er is geen 1 op 1 transactie tussen de persoon die bijdragen doet, en de persoon die ze ontvangt.   13. Competitie tussen mensen kan een belangrijke drijfveer zijn om informatie te delen: het draait om aanzien. Zorg er ook voor dat men iets kan opbouwen door het doen van bijdragen. Dit kan een profiel zijn, maar ook relaties met mensen in een community. In veel gevallen is dit een belangrijk mechanisme voor commitment. Het aanmaken van een profiel kan ook een barrière vormen, daarom heeft een geleidelijk proces de voorkeur.   14. Het hebben van een onderlinge band, manier van werken, of cultuur, versterkt de bereidheid om informatie te delen. Indien er nog vertrouwen moet worden gekweekt, is het van belang om afgeschermde ruimtes te bieden.
