How to Repel Mosquitoes Naturally using Essential Oils
1. How to repel mosquitoes naturally using
Essential Oils
This summer forget about toxic mosquito repellents and learn about natural and
effective ways to get rid of these annoying insects.
Mosquitoes are the most unwelcome summer visitors and they usually force us to
wear long sleeves, pants, and even socks to avoid their bites.
Below we will propose some ways to protect ourselves from their bites in natural
ways, especially with the correct selection and use of essential oils. Also, using the
suggestions below you are going to get rid of many other annoying insects in
addition to mosquitoes, such as flies and gnats.
2. Body Defense.
Natural Oil repellent for the body
If the idea to use a mosquito repellent product with chemicals from the drag store
does not appeal to you, you can make your own mosquito repellent oil with natural
ingredients.
In 30 ml almond oil (base oil), add 7 drops of lavender essential oil, 7 drops of
geranium and 4 drops of basil. This mixture is very aromatic and pleasant. We
recommend using this oil in body spots that mosquitoes prefer, such as ankles and
wrists.
3. Natural Cream repellent for the body
Those preferring creams instead of oil for the body, you can create your own
mosquito repellent cream. First you need to obtain a neutral cream from the drag
store. These creams do not have any active or flavoring ingredients and can be
used as the basis for preparing an insect repellent blend.
In 30g of cream, add 3 drops of lavender essential oil, 3 drops of cedar and 3
drops of basil. Mix well. Ideally use a stirrer to dissolve the essential oils to the
mixture. Note that the essential oils should not come into direct contact with the
skin, because they can cause irritation. Therefore, it is important to dissolve them
well in the mixture. Then put the cream in a jar and use it whenever necessary. The
advantage of using cream compared with oil is that it is absorbed easily by the skin
and does not leave a greasy feeling.
Perfume your balcony
Use a diffuser on your balcony
An essential oil diffuser on your balcony will be very useful for preventing
mosquitoes entering the house. Depending on the size of your balcony you might
need more than one diffuser.
4. The Essential oils that will be useful in a diffuser include citronella oil (6 drops)
and basil (6 drops). These two oils are probably the strongest insect repellents.
Mosquito Repellent Plants on your balcony
There are some plants and herbs, like basil and lavender, that have strong insect
repellent properties. If you wish, therefore, to strengthen the mosquito “defense” of
your home, you can place on your balcony plants such as basil, lavender and
geranium. Furthermore, you can prepare a natural mosquito repellent with basil
and vinegar. Just take a few basil leaves, cut them up in a bowl and then pour a
little vinegar on top. Put the mixture close by to repel mosquitoes.
Indoor Protection
Lavender in the child’s room
The aromatic oil which is highly recommended for your child’s room is lavender
because it has a pleasant smell and strong insect repellent activity. You can pour 10
drops of lavender oil in a diffuser or prepare a spray for the area. For the spray,
add 10 drops of lavender together with a teaspoon of vodka. Then pour the
mixture into 100 ml of deionized water and put the mixture into a spray bottle.
Diffuser in the living room
For the living room we suggest placing a diffuser in a central area and use
geranium and peppermint essential oils. These two have a nice smell and are
good choice as insect repellents.
Adding cinnamon essential oil, will “break” the strong aroma of the other two and
the smell becomes lighter and more pleasant. Use around 10 drops total of the
above essential oils (geranium, peppermint and cinnamon).
5. Create a Mosquito Repellent Candle
Citronella essential oil is one of the most effective natural mosquito repellents in
the world and one of the best ways to take advantage of this wonderful oil is in
citronella candles. These candles are easy to make, all natural and will release an
aroma that keeps mosquitoes away. Place a few candles around your patio or
garden and create a mosquito proof barrier!
Add 6-8 drops of citronella essential oil in melted wax (paraffin) and pour the
mixture in metal or glass container to create the candle.
6. For Soothing Mosquito Bites
For mosquito bites you can prepare a soothing blend with peppermint or
lavender oil. To prepare, mix 30g.of aloe gel and 18 drops of peppermint or
lavender essential oils. Mix well and apply to the sore point.
