1. Sant Jordi in Catalonia
Comenius Multilateral Project “ Here we are” 2011-2013
2. Sant Jordi, Saint George,
and his legend are well
known around Europe. He
is the saint patron of
Catalonia, England,
Bulgaria, Romania, as well
as other countries.
3. In Catalonia, the legend of Saint George is located in
Montblanc, a medieval town not far away from Bellpuig.
4. Tradition in Catalonia
St George's Day is a great day to be in Catalonia. The
streets of all the Catalan towns are full of people. There
are lots of stalls selling books and roses.
5. The celebration can’t
be simpler: people
walk, buy a rose, a
book or both, to give
them to the loved
ones, family and
friends. It is the
Catalan day of lovers.
The day is a singular
national holiday held
on a weekday.
6. The origin of this festival is found in a mixture of
traditions and different eras.
St. George is the patron saint of Catalonia (officially since
1456, although he is well venerated since the eighth
century).
There was also a Medieval Fair of roses to celebrate love
at the Palau de la Generalitat in Barcelona, the capital city
of Catalonia.
The Book Day, established in Barcelona in 1926, was
integrated to these traditions.
