 It has a population of over 10,000 people.

 Ballina rests on the Moy plain with the Ox
mountains to the east and Nephin to the

6. THE QUAY
Ballina town developed as a small sea port.
 The town expanded when the Quay was built
in 1836.
 It explorted live stock to Great Britain.
 The Quay is now primarily used for pleasure
boats.


8. The Quay, Bunree and Ardnaree are the
oldest parts of Ballina.
 They were originally part of Co. Sligo until
1898.


9. MARKET TOWN
A castle was later built in Ballina.
 Ballina developed as a market town.
 Lord Baron established the linen industry.
 He also increased trade in the town by
setting up fairs and markets.


11. BRIDGE
The Bridge was built in the 19th century.
 The town then was built up the other side of
the Moy.


When the Irish free state was established
many of Ballina’s street names were
changed to honour those patriots killed
during the struggle.

 King Street to O’ Rahilly Street.

18. CATHEDRAL
The Cathedral was built in 1834
 It is built in a Victorian Gothic style.
