Employees appraisal
1. Employees appraisal
For an employee appraisal here are some simple guidelines we recommend to ensure
both the employer and employee get maximum benefit from the appraisal process.
Make sure both parties are prepared - Review previous appraisal if available referring
to previous performance and agreed objectives and noting if goals have been
achieved.
Explain and work to a clear structure during the appraisal using templates provided
allowing adequate time for all areas to be covered.
Create the right environment - Maximum value is usually achieved by creating an
informal environment where individuals feel comfortable having an honest, open
meeting. The employee should not feel unable to express there true views and
feelings.
Begin with a general chat before getting into detail.
Performance rather than personality - Always discuss actual results, events and
behaviour rather than making things personal.
Encourage employee to do most of the talking - Use open questions. This allows the
employee to feel they are getting a fair say and also gives them chance to discuss
things that are on their mind. Encourage them to expand on things wherever possible.
The more you understand, the better picture you have of what is happening within the
business.
Start with positive feedback if possible - This helps the member of staff relax and
starts the appraisal meeting on the right footing.
Encourage employee self appraisal - Getting a sense of perspective from an employee
is invaluable. Rather than telling them how it is begin with asking them how they see
themselves and how things look from their point of view. They may undervalue
themselves.
Encourage self analysis of performance - When covering each area ask for the
employees views and discuss jointly to establish how things can be best addresses
moving forward.
Don't deliver unexpected criticism - Feedback on performance should be given at the
time rather than waiting for an appraisal. The purpose of the appraisal is to reflect on
the review period and to look ahead.
Make objectives measurable and have a clear plan of action moving forward.
2. Finish the appraisal on a positive footing - Aim for the employee to leave feeling
motivated and wanting to address the areas highlighted knowing the benefits this will
provide.
When an employee appraisal form is used and the staff appraisals process conducted
properly, both an employer and employee should find the experience to be beneficial
and positive.
