- I am considered a digital immigrant. I started out using the internet when TEA gave free accounts to educators. The internet was text based and one needed to know the exact address to get to the few sites that were available to the public. The one site that I consistently visited NCIP, national center to improve practice in special education
- Web 1.0 is static information. You searched, you bought, you read. You searched for information and read it Web 2.0 is interactive, collaboration, sharing, interact, contribute contentWeb 3.0 better ability for computer to computer to share information get better information
- Most people have a PLN that at least includes people they have face to face contact within their school and perhaps the school districtNow you need to look outside of your area to network with people across the globe. You don’t need to jump in with both feet and connect with everyone. One should decide what their interests and needs are and then what tools they feel most comfortable with using; we don’t need to recreate the wheel. We also need to be able to filter what is useful for us and for our students.
- As we look at some of the possible tools out there, we need to consider how they might be useful to us professionally and how will they help our students. Some of these tools will take barriers away for students. Here are some of my points that I would consider when looking at these different tools:How collaborative is the site? Can the student use tools to help with their input when interacting with the site>Is speed in interacting with the site an issue? Will this allow multiple ways to present information Does it promote student- centered learningHow accessible is it for screen or text readers
- Really simple syndicationYou read at your own timeYou don’t have to reach out to find the information
- Online interactive journals. There are blogs about almost any topic. You need to determine which ones have information you are interested in. Depending on your school policys classes can set up blogs to discuss topics they are studying. A great way to make students write for a purpose on a regular basis
- When you go to google and more, you can search just for blogs
- Groups collaborate together on posting sharing information. We just started working on our wiki and hope to place more information on it this summer
- The only way was to save your favorites and somehow have a system to share them between computers or when your computer crashed. Social bookmarking allows you to save your bookmarks on an internet server so you can access them anywhere. Then you can also collaboratively share your bookmarks. You can join other groups or create your own groups to share bookmarks. Work email work
- Collaborate on creating documents. Those of you who have Ipads or I touch or Iphone can work on your portable device and when you synch, synch it to a webserver such as evernote.Share documents that you create with othersDon’t need to worry if you can afford office Titanpad allows people to work simultaneously

- Twitter is not just following famous people. You can use Twitter on the computer and on smart phones. This is where you need to determine who you want to include in your PLN. You can look at people to see who they are following and how many tweets they send out.
- We need to teach our students how to more efficiently use searches. There are various different search engines out there. There are some different ways to search using google, this one website lists several possiblities. There are websites that provide visual resultsCreating weblists provide more teacher led websearches for students.
- We need to teach and talk to students about the issues with social networking. I recently found a website where the website got information about me from my Linked in account. Social networking is no longer just for sharing information with old high school peers. Professional organizations are sharing information via Facebook
- You can collaborate and create presentations. There are lots of presentations that other people have posted to be shared. There are websites where you can use to download videos to share with your class. Now with flip videos and videos on phones.
- Visual maps are great for helping students and us to organize our thoughts before writing. There are websites with some great ideas for creating low tech visual mapsThere are programs such as Inspiration and Kidspriation which allow you to create visual maps on computersNow there are visual maps websites where you can colloborate in creating your visual maps.
- Wordle is great for pasting information from passages and then having students look at the enlarged words to talk about what the passage is about. Wordsift and Tagul take this one step further by further investigating the words and their relationships
- Click on the website where teachers share their way to use voice thread. Students can use AAC devices to record their message
- QIAT listserve is a wonderful way to share information with people over the world
