Brigham Young took control of the Mormon church after Joseph Smith's death and led them on an organized journey west across the plains to find a new home in the Salt Lake Valley. Young planned the journey thoroughly over the winter, organizing supplies, wagons, and teams of oxen. The Mormons established rest camps along the way and reached the Missouri River by June 1846, where they built winter quarters. After the difficult winter, in 1847 Young led a small group to find a settlement site and discovered the Salt Lake Valley, intentionally choosing an area perceived as inhospitable to avoid further persecution.
