Believed to be the first instance in the world, of colour temperature changing luminaires have been installed in Helsinki, Finland. Helsinki, Finland developed a lighting plan which proposed the idea to have different colour temperatures on the street to suit the time of day and match the human centric circadian rhythms. In the evening they wanted to reduce the amount of blue light and have a ‘warm’ temperature. In the mornings when the locals are going to work, they wanted a larger blue light component to replicate the blue sky in the morning, to help control the Melatonin hormone and make us feel awake. Bear in mind that in Helsinki, it doesn’t get light until nearly 10 am and starts getting dark around 2pm in the depth of winter. The first installation is on the approach road on the island, where the oil refineries for Helsinki had been based for many years and they will/may roll it out across the entire island. The case study paper will go into more details of the reasoning for this approach, some of the technical difficulties encountered and will have some images of the final installation! by Nigel Parry FILP MSLL IEng, OrangeTek

Gamification is the process of applying game design elements to non-game contexts in order to drive user engagement, influence behavior and improve the user experience associated with digital products and services. Over the past year, the practice of gamification has exploded, fueled by marketing hype, media curiosity and spirited debate. While much of the discussion has revolved around extrinsic reward mechanisms as a panacea for customer loyalty and engagement, the most important and effective motivational dynamics of games have been left on the table. In this presentation I’ll cut through the hype and draw from the fundamentals of game psychology, double-tapping into the techniques game designers use to motivate, engage and guide players through a game’s lifecycle. In doing so, I’ll lay out a model for architecting user engagement, directing behavior and satisfying the needs of both users and business alike.

Comme de nombreux secteurs, l’industrie automobile est confrontée à une transformation radicale sous l’action de la pression des défis que la société doit relever pour la prochaine décennie. C’est dans ce contexte de changements, que l’Université de Liège a réalisé le livre blanc « FUTURE MOVE » au sein du projet Pôle Automobile Européen (PAE). Outre la crise sanitaire, l’électrification, l’essor de la mobilité douce, l’automatisation de la conduite et la digitalisation, la décarbonisation du secteur automobile s’impose comme une des lignes de force à l’horizon 2030-2035. Ces transformations posent de nombreux défis techniques, juridiques ou sociologiques pour lesquels des solutions restent à trouver. En particulier, le livre blanc a identifié le développement des véhicules à hydrogène comme un des axes importants de la relance et de la décarbonisation des transports dans la Grande Région. Les constructeurs voient dans l’hydrogène un axe prometteur pour les véhicules lourds et les véhicules utilitaires. L’émergence de cette nouvelle motorisation va de paire avec la mise sur pied de la filière de production d’hydrogène vert et avec l’installation d’un réseau de distribution. Comment cette technologie sera-t-elle intégrée par l’industrie automobile européenne ? Quelles sont les opportunités pour les PME et la recherche universitaire ? Quels seront les nouveaux acteurs de demain dans cette nouvelle filière ? Comment relever le challenge de la formation du personnel ?

In deze LEDtalk vertelt oprichter Chintah Shah van TVlight over de sensor die straatlantaarnpalen hun licht laat aanpassen aan weggebruikers (intelligent lichting the past & future). Door ze zachter te laten branden, kan het energieverbruik fors omlaag. Shah kwam op het idee toen hij boven Nederland vloog en zag hoeveel licht de lantaarnpalen afgaven. Op de TU in Delft werd in korte tijd het eerste prototype in elkaar gezet. Het koste veel tijd om tot de optimale oplossing te komen. Echter waar veel andere sensorbedrijven dit idee ook hadden, maar faalden in de techniek, slaagde hij. Hoe het technische precies werkt blijft geheim, maar zijn oplossing wordt inmiddels wereldwijd toegepast. Inmiddels wordt via data van de sensoren en slimme software, na gedacht Smart City concepten.
