Poverty Level in Asia
Understand the relationship between human development and poverty in Asia Give an assessment of the Asian population based on gender, literacy, life expectancy, income, composition, etc. Recognize the importance of having a high literacy rate in a country. Objectives
Analyze the relationship between economic development and human resources of Asian countries. Reflect on the effects and how people could contribute to the alleviation of poverty especially in the Philippines.
   See the sad reality 2.8 – 3 Billion people live in severe poverty These figures represent almost half of the world population
	    See the sad reality 1.2 – 1.3 Billion people live in extreme poverty, especially those in the Asian and African continents
Several definitions… Income poverty Basis of poverty:  per capita expenditure necessary to attain 2,000 to 2,500 calories per day According to the World Bank Basis: International poverty line
Arbitrary definitions
In the World Development Report 2000… Poverty not measured in terms of economics alone. Definition expanded: Basic needs were taken into consideration Exploitation of certain sectors of society Discrimination Inequalities between men and women Lack of opportunity to express opinion Vulnerablity to violence Powerlessness to fight corruption Lack of voice in the decision making processes
Human Resources of Asia
Population Growth Population of one nation Formulation of policies to arrest or hasten population growth
Population concerns: Aggravated by extreme poverty and hunger Environmental destruction Problem in education
Population distribution & composition Affect the potential development of a country

Significant portion of the population would be relying on old people,[object Object]
Health indicators
Health indicators May either imply progress or insufficiency in health services Vital in the government’s formulation of policies designed to improve the condition of its citizens High birth rate High death rate
Life expectancy Developed countries  vs. Underdeveloped countries
11 million children under the age of 5 die of hunger and other related illnesses For surviving children, they may experience difficulty in achieving the full potential of having a comfortable life
Projection! Around 3 – 4 billion people would be added to the world population between now and the year 2025...
Employment & progress
Employment Rate Percentage of the population with occupation Unemployment Rate Percentage of the population without any source of livelihood Scarcity of work and livelihood have serious implications: Food inadequacy for a family Reduction in purchasing power Increasing number of school drop-outs Rising incidence of various illneses and crime
GDP Gross Domestic Product The total market value of all goods and services produced in a country in a given year GDP / total population = per capita GDP

Education Essential to the development of a person to the country she or he belongs.

Migration The movement of people within 					and outside a country’s territory Major factor in the development 						of societies and states Currently offers the most immediate 				solution to alleviating unemployment 			problems and coping with economic 			difficulties
