• The Rough ER is covered in Ribosomes
• These ribosomes give it a “rough” look
• The Ribosomes are only bound to the ER
when they are synthesizing proteins
• The actual structure of the ER is many
folded and twisted membranes
3. Function
• There are 2 functions of the Endoplasmic
Reticulum
• 1) The ER transports proteins and other
molecules to other parts of the cell
• 2) The ER makes more membrane. Some of
the proteins made by the ER Ribosomes are
inserted into the membrane, as phospholipids
are made by ER ribosomes
4. More about the Endoplasmic
Reticulum
• The ER is very large within the cell , it
expands a ways so that it can
transport molecules around the cell.
• There are no diseases that effect this
organelle directly
