HIV can be passed from one person to another through bodily fluids like blood, semen, pre-seminal fluid, rectal fluids, vaginal fluids, and breast milk. These fluids must come into contact with a mucous membrane or damaged tissue or be directly injected from a needle into the bloodstream of another person for transmission to occur. The most common methods of transmission are through unprotected sexual intercourse with an infected individual, contaminated needles, breastfeeding, or transmission from an infected mother to her baby during pregnancy or delivery.
