Born in 1956 to a minor government official
Prabhu Das and his wife Ram Rathi.
Belongs to the Dalit community, the former
untouchables in the Hindu caste hierarchy. She is
a Jatav (Chamar), a sub-caste within Dalits.
Well educated, B.A., B.ed.and LLB. She worked as
a teacher in Delhi for several years.
Prior to her entry into the political
arena, Mayawati was keen on becoming an IAS
officer.

Taj corridor case (2002-2003) Mayawati was
charged with corruption. The Taj Corridor project
was a project to upgrade tourist facilities near the
Taj Mahal implemented during her tenure as Chief
Minister.
She has been accused of ordering her BSP's MPs to
contribute their discretion-funds and MPLAD funds
to the party-fund illegally..
