Tutorial Learning Outcomes:
In this tutorial students will:
 Acquire basic skills of digital imaging production
 Begin to develop an understanding of the inter-relationship between DTP theory and practice
 Begin to establish competence in the use of the digital mediums
 Begin to develop an awareness of digital photography as a contemporary medium of
communication.
 Begin to establish competence in the basic creative and technical aspects of image editing and
manipulation.
 Enhance their skills using image manipulation applications and composite layered image making
 Begin to establish a competence in designing visual documents for web and print
 Investigate the complexities of compositional layered image making.
 Use and understand basic design strategies and rationales
 Begin to develop aesthetic/compositional skills and strategies
 Begin to understand the importance of semiotics.
 Utilize the following procedures:
 create, modify, save and print a document containing graphics
 manipulate objects
 create simple and complex graphics
 create and edit electronic documents
 Recognise and use associated vocabulary
 Recognise the steps in electronic image management by selecting and using appropriate storage
and naming conventions

2. Airbrushing
1. Choose File open
2. Navigate to the Lesson 6 Folder and choose airbrush.jpg

3. 3. Choose File Save As
4. In the Save As dialog box, name the file after your initials _airbrush.psd (eg. MC_airbrush.psd) and save it in the
Lesson06 folder.

4. 5. In the layers panel, right click on the background layer and choose duplicate Layer.
6. In the popup dialogue box click OK
7. In the Tools panel, select the Spot Healing Brush tool.
8. In the options panel set
a. The diameter to 10
b. The hardness to 0
9. Zoom in on one of the girls spots and click and drag over it to remove it.

5. 10. Use the healing brush for the spot under her nose and any other multi-tonal areas.
11. In the options panel set
a. The diameter to 10
b. The hardness to 0
12. Remember to hold to alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) to select a source point. Continue until you have
removed all spots and blemishes

6. 13. Use the patch tool to select the laughter-line/wrinkle next to her nose.
14. Click and drag the selected area above to choose a cloning source. Try to select a space near the patched area.

7. 15. Choose Select > Deselect.
16. Use the healing brush tool to further blend in the newly patched area. If necessary you can also use the clone
tool. Remember to choose a small sized (10-30 pixel) brush with a soft edge.
17. Use the same technique to remove (or soften) the wrinkle next to her lip and the indentation below her nose.

8. 18. Choose File > Save.
19. Use a combination of the healing brush and the clone tool to remove the stray hairs from her face.

9. 20. Choose Filter > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask.
21. In the popup dialogue box change

10. 22. The image should now appear less blurred
23. In the layers panel, right click on the current layer and choose duplicate Layer.
