Software asset management
1. Software asset management(SAM) Martin Jakubička Faculty of Informatics Masaryk University Institute of Computer Science Czech republic
2. Introduction SAM represents an important part of software maintenance and inevitable part of organization’s AM Brings many serious aspects and issues not seen in other domains of AM It constitute complex, nontrivial problem (demanding deep understanding, broad overview in many areas: law, management, economy,…)
3. Why own solution? There is not methodology of deploying such complex system in this environment (university) It follows, there is not any suitable SAM system (thought tool) for license managing there Most of the commercial tools are made as desktop application (only for main manager) students/employees IS
4. Main goals Creating of methodology for SAM deployment and management in large organizations of university type: Develop policy Establish registration procedures Establish education program Periodic audit Analysis, design and implementation of SAM system which will be able to satisfy this methodology
5. Differences Differences between this environment and other companies – policy Many computers (40+ k students, nearly 4000 employees) – offices, study rooms, laptops, servers,… Researchers often need to install some sophisticated software themselves (rights) Academicians refuse to scan their computers
7. Expected results Deploying of SAM system to Institute of Computer Science (in progress) and some faculties of Masaryk university If it will be accepted it is offered to other universities to use
9. My question(s) Do you think the university degree can evoke some troubles in the private sector? How to make foreign conferences more interesting/attractive for PhD students?
