Lightning talk describing how to give synchronization and offline capabilities to native mobile and desktop aplications. The main idea is to take advantage of PouchDB a database that syncs and that can be embedded in any Javascript application. This talk is based on real-life usages from the Cozy.io Personal Cloud.

Elasticsearch is a distributed, RESTful search and analytics engine built on top of Apache Lucene. After the initial release in 2010 it has become the most widely used full-text search engine, but it is not stopping there. The revolution happened and now it is time for evolution. We dive into the following questions: - What are shards, how do they work, and why are they making Elasticsearch so fast? - How do shard allocations (which were hard to debug even for us) work and how can you find out what is going wrong with them? - How can you search efficiently across clusters and why did it take two implementations to get this right? - How can new resiliency features improve recovery scenarios and add totally new features? - Why are types finally disappearing and how are we avoid upgrade pains as much as possible? - How can upgrades be improved so that fewer applications are stuck on old or even ancient versions?

As Monolith to Microservices migration almost became mainstream, Engineering Teams have to think about how their caching strategies will evolve in cloud-native world. Kubernetes is clear winner in containerized world so caching solutions must be cloud-ready and natural fit for Kubernetes. Caching is an important piece in high performance microservices and choosing right architectural pattern can be crucial for your deployments. Hazelcast is a well known caching solution in open source community and can handle caching piece in microservices based applications. From qconsf 2010 - this presentation focuses on how the classic querying models like plain SQL and JPA map to distributed data stores. It first reviews the current distributed data stores landscape and its querying models, and then discuss the wide range of APIs for data extraction from these data stores. It then discusses the main challenges of mapping various APIs to a distributed data model and the trade offs to be aware off.

Many applications start out storing their data in a relational database in a well-defined, normalized schema. Over time, this primary data store often begins to fail to meet some of the application's needs. Perhaps some queries that need to run against it are too slow or complex, or maybe the application puts too much load on the database. Traditional solutions to these problems such as batch loads into other data stores, or the addition of a remote cache like Memcached or Redis to the application, suffer from problems such as long delays and cache misses. If changes to the tables in the primary database are also captured in Kafka topics, then we can build better solutions that stream data into materialized views and in-process data caches. We'll explore these ideas and see code examples using Scala, Postgres, Kafka, Elasticsearch and RocksDB.

Building Atlassian Connect add-ons with client-server frameworks like Express.JS and Play produces powerful add-ons, but requires hosting and database consideration. In contrast, "static" Connect add-ons are easier to write and far simpler to deploy. A static Connect add-on is simply a set of files (including an atlassian-connect.json descriptor) that are web accessible, either through a web server or via deployment to a CDN. Static add-ons have several advantages. First, infinite scalability. Why pay for CPU when you can let the user agent do the work? Second, simple persistence. Why pay for disk when you have local storage and JIRA & Confluence's persistence REST APIs? Third, extreme performance. Let a worldwide CDN serve your files from the nearest edge - it's literally impossible to compete with a static add-on when it comes to performance! Finally, easy caching. Why bother serving requests when your unchanged static files can be cached indefinitely with simple HTTP caching? In this talk I'll highlight the benefits and restrictions of static add-on architecture, and discuss the nuts and bolts of implementing a static add-on. I'll also show off the static add-on skeleton that will get your static add-on development off to a flying start.

There’s an old expression, that there are only 2 hard problems in computing: naming, cache invalidation and off-by-one errors. Building offline web apps is all about those hard problems. There are some different ways of storing stuff — such as html5 caching, html5 storage, sqllite, and even native stores such as contacts and calendars — and we’ll sing their praises. But the really hard problems are knowing what to store, whether the stuff is still good or needs refreshing, how much to store, how to resolve conflicts between the client and server, how to integrate with data-specific stores, all in a bewildering cacophony of network and storage limited devices. We’ll spend the bulk of our time on these hard problems, which is probably more useful than api description and sample code. Dave Orchard is Mobile Architect at Salesforce.com and located in Vancouver, Canada. This means being involved in many mobile platforms, architectures, tools, technologies and APIs. Prior to that, he was a co-founder of Ayogo Games and focused on iPhone and ruby/merb/mysql based casual social games. Back further in the mists of time, he was the Web standards lead for BEA Systems for 7 years, including being elected three times to 2 year terms on the W3C Technical Architecture Group chaired by Sir Tim Berners-Lee. Most of us are familiar with HTTP, but when it actually comes to creating cacheable web content, there is still a lot to be learned. In this presentation I will show you how to leverage specific mechanism to achieve a good hit rate without losing touch with some of the challenges of real-life web projects. Keywords: cache control, cache variations, conditional requests, stateful content, HTTP fragments, invalidation. The goals is to empower developers to control the behavior of reverse caching proxies like Varnish, Content Delivery Networks, or even browser cache, using the power of HTTP.

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
