Let’s Start a Learning Revolution Michael Karnjanaprakorn, @mikekarnj Skillshare, Co-Founder http://skillshare.com
Today, we’re going to challenge the traditionalnotion of education. Because the pinnacle of education is getting into college, not learning.
“Just because a boy wants to go to college is no reason we should finance it.” - President Franklin D. Roosevelt, 1939
“We will provide the support necessary for all young Americans to complete college and meet a new goal: By 2020, America will once again have the highest portion of college graduates in the world.” - President Obama
We need to debunkthemyth that a college degree leads to success.
1. Myth: college leads to higher lifetime earnings. $1,000,000 How much a college graduate can earn in their lifetime according to a US Census Report. Actual amount the average college graduate earns in their lifetime including college fees and variant costs. $279,893
2. Myth: college leads to awesome jobs “17M Americans with college degrees are doing jobs that require less than the skill levels associated with a bachelor’s degree.” Source: The Chronicle of Higher Education
3. Myth: college leads to higher paying returns Richard Vedder from The Chronicle of Higher Education debunks the myth that a college education will result in higher paying returns. Focused on a small subgroup of the entire education ecosystem.
4. Myth: everyone can go to a great school Not everyone can go to Harvard 20,000 students per year Here’s the reality...
500,000 students $3.7B (2009 revenue)
“Americans now owe more on their student loans ($830B) than their credit cards ($827B).” Source: Wall Street Journal, August 9, 2010
Not everyone has to go to college. Having a college degree will notensure that you will be successful.
#1 Who made up the rule that we have to attend college for 4 years? Why not 2-year colleges?
#2 Why not pay students to quit college? Peter Thiel pays would-be entrepreneurs under-20 $100,000 to drop out of school.
#3 Why not invest into students like we do with startups?
#4 Here’s an even easier solution. Why not go back to the true goal of education: LEARNING
STOP BUILDING APPS, START DISRUPTING INDUSTRIES
"The only thing that interferes with my learning is my education." - Albert Einstein
