Marketing to Seniors  SIX MYTHS and REALITIES
MYTH #1: Senior citizens are retired.
REALITY: American workers are older than ever. About 22 percent of U.S. workers are over 55, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. There are 7.8 million workers over 65, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
MYTH #2: Senior citizens are brand loyal.
REALITY: Studies show that seniors are no more or less brand loyal than other age groups. They actively comparison shop, often online.
MYTH #3: Senior citizens pinch pennies.
REALITY: Seniors, especially Baby Boomers, have money and like to spend it. They control 70 percent of the country's disposable income and will inherit $15 trillion over the next 20 years.
MYTH #4: Senior citizens prefer print.
REALITY: People over 65 are the fastest growing audience on social media.
MYTH #5: Senior citizens are infirm, or soon will be.
REALITY: Seniors need information about health care and wellness, but their health does not define them. They are active, representing 80 percent of premium travel and one-fourth of all health club memberships.
MYTH #6: Senior citizens are alone.
REALITY: Those over 55 are the fastest growing segment in online dating services. There has also been an increase in plastic surgery among those over 55.
