This document outlines a unit on the internet, including objectives, tools, and plans. It discusses how to import text and images from web pages using copy and paste functions. It explains how to perform searches on the internet using search engines or web addresses. It defines key terms like the web, internet, website, and search engine. It also describes what is needed to set up an internet connection, including a computer, modem, internet service provider, and telephone line. Finally, it discusses different types of computer networks like LAN, MAN, and WAN.

Activity 1: In order to prepare your project work you need to search for and find
information that you can use. This project must contain text and images. While searching on the
Net, you have found beautiful images that you want to insert them in your project. How do
you copy text and images from the web page?
2. Pioneer Prep. School of Sfax 2
I.1. Importing (Downloading) a text from a web page:
1. First of all, launch the software which allows you to exploit the Internet resources
and used to display information located in the web. This software is called a
Browser. Here some examples of browsers:
; ; ;
; ; etc.
2. In to the address bar of the Browser type the URL (the Uniform Resource Locator)
of a special Web site which we call search engine.
a. What is a search engine?
A search engine is a web site that searches Web pages for specified keywords and returns
the list of links to web pages matching to your research.
b. What is a Web page?
It is a document containing text, graphics, video etc that can be accessed through a
browser on the Internet.
c. What is a website?
It is an organized and interlinked collection of web pages providing information on any
topic. These web pages are linked together by hyperlinks. Each website has:
3. Pioneer Prep. School of Sfax 3
An URL: (Uniform Resource Locator): an address of a website on the web. (Also
called the web address). Usually in the form:
protocol://server-name.domain-name.top-level-domain:port/directory/filename
http://www.kidsites.com
http://www.edunet.tn
http://www.nickjr.com/
http:// www.e-learningforkids.org
https://www.facebook.com
http://www.wikipedia.org
A home page: is the first page of a web site.
- We will use Internet Explorer as a browser to navigate.
3. In the search box type the key words of the topic you search for; then validate your
research.
II- Research in the web
4.
Task 3: Workspace of a search engine
- Go to the web site www.google.com
- Put the number in the right place:
Task 2: Window of Internet explorer
- Launch Internet Explorer.
- Complete this schema with words from the list:
Menus bar/ Address bar/ Title bar/ Tools bar/ web page area

5. Pioneer Prep. School of Sfax 5
To refresh or (update) the current window with the latest
data or information.
To go back to Home page.
To display a window allowing to do research.
To open a list of your favorite websites.
To go back to the latest page that you have visited.
To display a list of web sites that has been visited.
5. Click on the hyperlink that matches your research and then you will have access to the web site
from which you can copy the information that you need. Here the steps to follow:
1. High light the textblock
that we want to import;
2. Select the “edit” menu,
3. Click on the “Copy”

command.
b- Saving a picture from a web page:
1) Right click on the picture to copy (to download)
2) Choose the option “Save image as”
6. Pioneer Prep. School of Sfax 6
3) The window “Save As” opened, choose the location (drive and Folder) where to store the
image.
4) Give a name to the picture in the “file name” box.
5) Click on “save “button to validate.
Observation1: Surfing on the web and the research of data can be:
By address: if you know the website URL
By search engine: if you don’t know where to find the information than you
would rather use a search engine to search for possible links which can lead you
to the right webpage which contains the information you look for.
Observation2: We can collect information from:
-books, news papers, magazines;
-other people: teachers, elders, mentors, encyclopedic scientist…
-TV; Radio; etc.
Today, thanks to the technological development there’s another source of information
which is Internet by surfing the web.
But what is exactly Internet means and what’s the difference between
Internet and the Web?
7. Pioneer Prep. School of Sfax 7
The Web or the WWW an Internet service , one of the many services that Internet
provides like the e-mail, the chat, the videoconferencing, the social networking, the
File Transfer , etc.
Internet
8. Pioneer Prep. School of Sfax 8
The right hardware
a. A powerful computer with at least 8 megabytes (MB) of RAM and
10 MB of free disk space.
b. A Modem (external)or (modem card internal device):
is an electronic device that connects computers and identify the data being sent
and received. (go back to the first unit).
c. A telephone line or a satellite transmission or any other
telecommunication system.
Wires, cables, optical fibers, satellite transmission are physical links ≠
hyperlinks are abstract links between web pages and websites
9. Pioneer Prep. School of Sfax 9
A Browser: Is an application program used to display information located in the
web.
A subscription to an ISP (Internet Service Provider): It is also called Internet Service
Provider (ISP): an organization that provides consumers with an access to the Internet
by giving them a login and a password. Examples:
Wanadoo , TOPNET , GlobalNet , HexaByte
Internet services:
Task 5: Have you ever been connected to the Internet? What did you do?
Task 5: Fill in the blanks with the right words: modem/ browser/ Internet
Service Provider (or ISP)/ Computer/ Telephone line
Task 6: Fill in the blanks with the right words:
modem/ browser/ Internet Service Provider (or ISP)/ Computer/
Telephone line

What is a computer network?
* Terminals, and communication devices: iPad; i phone; smart phones; e-book; PSP;…
**wires, cables, or a telecommunication system: are means of connection through wires or wireless
connection.
A computer network allows also sharing software resources like files, folders, programs; to
consult them or make modifications.
• The son wants to remote play games with his sister each one from his own room.
Task 5: Complete the following definition with words from this list:
information, exchange, computers, connected, communicate, wires, share

In this unit, I learned...
A computer network allows users to multi-play games also to communicate, to exchange
information, to chat with each other and to share software and hardware resources.
The mother wants to have the control over her family and she wants to know what they
are doing with their computers.
More than that, she wants to be connected to her office so she could exchange documents
with her colleagues in order to correct the mistakes and to track changes.
Types of networks based on physical scope:
Common types of computer networks may be identified by their scale. E.g.:
A wide area network (WAN) is a
computer network that covers a large
geographic area such as a city, country, or
spans even intercontinental distances…
A Metropolitan area network (MAN) is a large
computer network that usually spans a city or
a large campus.
A local area network (LAN) is a network that
connects computers and devices in a limited
geographical area such as home, school,
computer laboratory, office building, or
closely positioned group of buildings.
The computer network is two or more computers connected between them.
Internet called also, network of networks, is the all computer resources linked
in metropolitan geographic area (A worldwide network).
The web is one of Internet services. It’s constituted of web pages containing
text, images sound and video. These pages linked by hyperlinks.
Every web page is identified by web address. A web address ( or URL
address) can have the following form:
http:/www.Computer_name/Folder/File_name.html
The surfing on the web and the research of data can be:

By search engine
It’s possible to import texts and images from the web in order to use them off
