modern bridges, connectivity in the C21st: is the internet a force for good?

Thursday, 15 July 2010
hello :)

imran ali - chief everything officer
                  we think about “emerging technologies”…
helping people understand the future…(and inventing little pieces of it)

Thursday, 15 July 2010
keeping the conversation going…

                  facebook group
                  5x central questions
keeping discussions alive, before & after

Thursday, 15 July 2010
our discussions…

                  I. does copyright matter anymore?
II. public content: does it belong to you or the government?
                  III.rules for remixing…
IV.who owns google, facebook & youtube
V.“all of us are smarter than one of us”

Thursday, 15 July 2010
does copyright matter anymore?

making copies no longer costs anything.
one copy of a digital movie costs the same as a 1m copies.
should creators focus on making things that’re unique & *can't* be
                  copied…
                  live gigs, merchandising, IMAX, 3D?

Thursday, 15 July 2010
public content: yours or the govt’s?
our govts own an incredible amount of data about us & our society...
healthcare, CCTV, traffic, crime data, maps, mp expenses, govt budgets, parliament records

in many cases, this isn't easily available…if at all.
                  great examples of public content:
                         http://www.theyworkforyou.com

                         http://www.nycbigapps.com/application-gallery

should we expect to own this or trust govt without question?

rules for remixing…
when content’s digital, can be broken down & made into something
                  new
iPods and MP3s let us remix how we listen to and share music.

BitTorrent, Tivo, iPlayer and Sky+ let us remix the way we watch TV and movies.

Wikipedia remixed the boring old encyclopedia.

Kindle, iPad are changing the way we read books and magazines.

Indeed, soon we'll be able to remix DNA!

what're the rules for remixing? how can a creator of content set
some rules that allow remixing, but also give them some reward?

who owns google, facebook & youtube

                  a simple question?
google, facebook & youtube are all companies right?
all are profitable with the contributions that YOU make
should share their profits with the users that contribute?

Thursday, 15 July 2010
“all of us are smarter than one of us”
helping people share ideas and collaborate
                         writing some software

                         planning an event

                         sharing some video on YouTube.

"participatory culture" & "architectures of participation
anyone can take part in anything...
what are the upsides & downsides of this kind of capability?
