Discover How Top iOS Game Developers such as Adam Saltsman of Canabalt fame find lasting success on the App Store.
Learn Tips and Tricks from Best Selling iPhone Game Developers
Shane Lee spoke to hundreds of iPhone app developers and curated a selection of the most intriguing success stories to find out how they accomplished their goals. These are the developers behind award winning games such as Canabalt, Bumpy Road, Super Crate Box, Hunters, Spider: The Secret of Bryce Mansion and many more.
While this presentation focuses on mobile game developers that have published iOS games, the lessons here are applicable to other platforms such as Blackberry and Android.
3. So What does a Mobile App
Developer Have to do to Get
Noticed?
There are nearly 863,060 apps on the App Store as of
April 2013.
It's only a matter of time before the number of apps
skyrocket past the million mark.
That's a lot of apps out there and the competition for
downloads is brutal.
4. Learn :
✦Why localizing Squids in French and German led to an increase in sales for The
Game Bakers
✦How Hunters creator Ben Murch's persistance and tenacity finally landed their
game a feature in a popular gaming website
✦Why Bumpy Road creator Simon Flesser emphasizes the use of making video
trailers to promote his games
✦What Vlambeer Studios did when their game, Radical Fishing got ripped off
✦Why Canabalt creator Adam Saltsman believes in cultivating friendships with
game journalists
6. Make Kickass Games:
A common refrain by all the indies interviewed is a
commitment to making the highest quality games
possible. There is an underlying understanding that
releasing great games that fans can connect with will
increase the chances of building a sustainable business.
7. Collaborate:
A number of the developers interviewed mentioned
needing help in some form or another in building their
games. Many of them turn to others for help, looking for
experts in the desired area of expertise.
Canabalt creator Adam Saltsman sought the help of
Danny Baranowsky to compose the music to his hit
game. Ben Murch of Hunters fame outsourced the music
and some of the artwork for his latest project.
8. The Presentation of Your
Game Is as Important as
the Game Itself:
There’s a general consensus that design and
graphics can make or break your game.
This is something that definitely should not
be overlooked or rushed out. Design is
generally considered difficult to do well,
and if you’re not well versed in the subject,
you should consider seeking help in this
area.
9. Make Games that Take
Advantage of the iOS
Platform: Create games that take full advantage of
what the iPhone and iPad can offer. One of
the reasons the iPhone was so successful
was because it revolutionized the way we
interacted with our devices. The
accelerometer and gyroscope can help
developers create games that are
extremely intuitive to play, and these types
of games tend to be the ones that really
connect with a broad audience.
10. Marketing Is Vital:
All of the developers interviewed are in
agreement that marketing has become
essential for App Store success.
Unfortunately, marketing also tends to be
the area that gets ignored the most. Many
indies expend most of their effort on the
design and programming aspects of the
game, and fail to realize why they only sell a
handful of copies during launch.
