5. University spin-outs University derived SMEs – the most intensive of relationships where the University has a stake in the start-up EVO Electric. Established in 2007 as a spin-out company from Imperial College London to commercialise new electric machine technologies. QuantaSol, another spin-out from Imperial College London developed advanced technology of high efficiency III generation based solar cells.

10. Knowledge Transfer Partnerships Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) is a programme facilitating partnerships between a business and an academic institution. KTPs are funded by The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). ESRC provides funding for PhD studentships where businesses take the lead in arranging projects with an academic partner of their choice. The aim is to provide PhD students with a challenging research training experience, within the context of a mutually beneficial research collaboration between academic and partner organisations.
11. Collaborative R&D (KTA) Innovation Awards for Collaborative R&D The University of Sheffield has launched a scheme (funded by EPSRC) to work with UK based SMEs in the area of `Building for the Future´. 10 Innovation Awards have been made available to initiate Collaborative R&D projects and give SMEs the opportunity to access research expertise and facilities at the University of Sheffield. Projects are business-led and aim to develop innovative products, processes or technology in the area of `Building for the Future´.

14. Energy-Unplugged We aim to develop and patent a basket of new technologies relating to Smart Grid management, Intelligent Energy Production and Energy Storage.
