Here is a look at the 5 technologies we see shaking up marketing today and that I’m going to briefly discuss with you. In 2012, 657 million smartphones predicted to be sold, up from 459 million in 2011 (JP Morgan)
More than half of smartphone or tablet users (51.1%) say they check email only on their mobile phones. Nearly half (45.3%) perform Internet searches that way. More than one-quarter (25.4%) do all — yes, all — of their online shopping from mobile devices.
Mobile technology is now the current forerunner of interest of consumers. It is up to the marketers, and print service providers, to continue to give consumers what they are looking for without stepping too far away from the roots of traditional media. The time is now for the mobile technology and traditional media to collaborate and produce interactive, informative print content that consumers are looking for.In a recent InfoTrends study entitled, Mobile Technology: Making Print Interactive, an estimated 52.4 million American mobile phone owners have interacted with a mobile code. Interestingly, consumers who have interacted with a mobile code earn more than the average U.S. income and are very likely to scan QR codes again.But one key thing to remember --- the need for mobile goes well beyond just QR Codes!!
Search ad spending via mobile increased more than 300% as more mobile consumers look for more things from their phone, according to IgnitionOne research. When it comes to a mobile website, you obviously need to simplify! Yes, you can have pages.. Yes, you can have external links!A huge question I always get is --- how many should I have?I really think that depends.. If the content is compelling, if the titles of the links are compeeling, you can certainly go below the fold!But if you are only tryign to get people to register for an event, you probably want to make sure you don’t distract them from that task
Design options… There are pre-defined color schemes to make life easier for you… but you obviusly have the ability to define your own colors!
1. Add Click-to-Call and Click-To-Text Links: One of the best ways to develop an effective mobile website presence is to take advantage of the functions that really wouldn’t work as well on another device. You can do this by adding click-to-call and click-to-text links on your pages. By clicking on these links, people will be instantly brought to the appropriate application inside of your phone, to either dial you or send you a text-message.
This one is huge! You don’t just need static pages. You can have forms that drive leads! That drive registrations ! That provide survey feedback.
Here’s a very practical example of using forms.. Here’s the key … Don’t just put a QR Code on your client’s printed material that points to their corporate website! Really work with them to point it to a landing page where you can capture information of some sort. Ask questions, provide information… That will help you to truly demonstrate value!
Another thing you can do is incorporate video.Our #1 recommendation is to use YouTube! You can embed the video onto your mobile website’s pages, and then YouTube does a great job of reliably and quickly displaying that video to someone’s phone.Also, people are quite apt to using social networks on their phones. We have a Share This button that makes it easy for them to promote your mobile content.
You can also add RSS feeds and blog posts to mobile website..
How can you get people to your mobile website?Well, one way is by inserting Mobile Device detection and redirect code.
And just to talk about Cards… A lot of people have QR Codes on their business cards.A lot of those simply present the data as text.However, we honestly have seen greater value by poitning people to mobile websites. They are more interactive, they open up connections to more data points.
In addition to easily tracking website traffic and stats, you can plug in Google Analytics as well to mobile websites

Jason- there are certainly disadvantages and advantages to everything. For example, the disadvantage of mobile websites is that you cannot view Flash on a mobile device. However, there are advantages such as the ability to build forms and gather data, as well as click-to-call, text and email features.-”David, what are some ways you tried to educate yourself in order to be able to sell QR Codes and mobile websites?”David- look for examples online, see how others are using them, read news sites such as Mobile Marketer (http://www.mobilemarketer.com/)
David- lunch and learn example- Reiterate that mobile marketing does not take away from your print business
Now, when I say this… It doesn’t have to be QR Codes… it could be a Short URL/SMS, link, etc.
If your website is not mobile optimized, it can create frustration. You will lose visitors. You will lose traffic.You will lose customers.
