23. KAMPOS
The development of the Kampos began in
the years of Genoese domination (1346-
1566). The Giustiniani introduced and
organized the systematic cultivation of
citrus trees as well as the export trade of
their fruits.
Chios is an island of seafarers, fishermen, scholars and farmers. Chios Island is famous for its shipping and its contribution to international trade.
The villages of Chios are divided into 3 categories according to their position.
Voriochora are placed in the north,
Kampochora in the central part of the island and
Mastihochoria otherwise known as Notiochora in the south.
The island is referred to as "myrovolos" which means fragrant, as special flowers and wildflowers enrich the flora of the island.
Cyclamens, lilies, wild tulips and orchids make their appearance in early spring. Out of 250 species of orchids found in Europe, 110 can be found on the island.
The spring at Chios is filled with Wild Tulips. There are about six kinds of tulips on Chios which are self-grown, without the care of anyone. The Dutch sailors who arrived on the island in the Medieval times and took some seeds back in their country. That is how Holland started cultivating tulips, which have become since then its trademark
Aplotaria is the main commercial street at Chios Town, from ancient times.
Mesta, is a perfectly preserved village-castle of the Byzantine period (14th and 15th centuries).
The village of Mesta is built within a castle. The interior of the village is completely inaccessible to cars and motorcycles. The Castle-village, takes you back centuries, with its very few changes
is a beach with small black pebbles, created by the volcano overlooking the beach
The Genoese and local aristocracy of Chios built their mansions in Kampos.
Is a small coastal town located at the eastern part of the island.
Lagkada village is known for its amphitheatric layout along a valley and it is surrounded by olives trees, and sea water.
