1. Climate science: The basics
Outreach Event on the IPCC Role, Activities and Findings
Event for students
30 November 2016
Kingston, Jamaica
INÉS CAMILLONI
IPCC AR5 Lead Author
Dept. of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences/CIMA
University of Buenos Aires/CONICET, Argentina
5. Earth’s atmosphere
Water vapor
Carbon dioxide
Methane
Nitrous oxide
…
Greenhouse effect
Natural process that warms the Earth’s surface and
the lower atmosphere.
6. (IPCC2013,Fig.6.11)
CO2: +40%
CH4: +150%
N20: +20%
year 0 = 1750
The atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide,
methane and nitrous oxide have all increased since 1750
due to human activity
12. Limiting climate change will require substantial and
sustained reductions of greenhouse gas emissions.
Notes de l'éditeur
Global mean sea level will continue to rise during the 21st century (see Figure SPM.9). Under all
RCP scenarios the rate of sea level rise will very likely exceed that observed during 1971–2010
due to increased ocean warming and increased loss of mass from glaciers and ice sheets
