6B Approach for toilet superstructure


Principles adopted :
• hygienically separate excreta from
 human contact
• financially affordable toilet
• Provide no subsidy or low subsidy.
• Enhance capacity to utilize locally
 available materials properly.
• Upgrade toilet as per financial status

• Around 1200 toilets constructed within 1.5 yrs in poor cluster
• Reduced subsidy (US$217 to US$38) by municipalities
• Municipality institutionalised the approach - toilets for poor
• Sanitation Card (Certificate of having toilet) has been
 distributed to people
• Self initiatives to upgrade
  toilet superstructures
  Through informed choices

Learning

Need to
• first understand that feaces should be separated hygienically
 from human contact
• provide different affordable options of superstructure
• Provide training on proper use of locally available materials
• follow up regular and motivate for updgrading the
 superstructure
• Project should be followed by sludge management while
 promoting toilet in poor community

Challenges

• Subsidy is a barrier : Message to wait for toilet
• Natural incidents (flood and storm) posses hindrance to this
