TEACHING ENGLISH AS A SECOND 
LANGUAGE TO STUDENTS IN PANAMA 
• The researcher presents the topic Teaching English as a Second 
Language to Students in Panama by reason of the importance 
that this language has worldwide. 
• As in all the countries in where this language has become 
essential for life, Panama is not the exception; here, English is a 
key issue in schools.
CHAPTER I 
HISTORY OF TEACHING ENGLISH 
AS A SECOND LANGUAGE 
Background 
 the teaching of English as a second language (ESL) began in the 
15th century when the British Empire needed to communicate with 
other colonies. 
 Other acronyms for this include EFL (English as a Foreign 
Language) and EAL (English as an Additional Language).
The Grammar-Translation Method is a traditional method based on 
to translate literary masterpieces and classics and not to speak a 
foreign language. 
The Direct Method discards any use of mother tongue in the 
classroom. 
The Audio-Lingual Method involves auditory, visual and grammar-type 
learning activities.
 Teaching English as a Second Language generally refers to 
teach English to someone whose native language is another one.

 “TESL” came out when English was expanding worldwide since it 
started to be used for trade. 
 Because of the importance of this language globally, in Panama, 
English has become the main tool, boosting the economy and tourism. 
 There are effective techniques that teachers can apply to improve 
students´ skills. 
CONCLUSIONS
RECOMMENDATIONS 
• Students must be encouraged to the importance of the English language 
for their professional progress. 
• The teacher's duty is increasing his/her understanding looking for 
resources. 
• The teacher must remember that teaching a language is a process that 
requires patience and dedication.

TEACHING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE TO STUDENTS IN PANAMA • The researcher presents the topic Teaching English as a Second Language to Students in Panama by reason of the importance that this language has worldwide. • As in all the countries in where this language has become essential for life, Panama is not the exception; here, English is a key issue in schools.
  • 3. CHAPTER I HISTORY OF TEACHING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE Background  the teaching of English as a second language (ESL) began in the 15th century when the British Empire needed to communicate with other colonies.  Other acronyms for this include EFL (English as a Foreign Language) and EAL (English as an Additional Language).
  • 4. The Grammar-Translation Method is a traditional method based on to translate literary masterpieces and classics and not to speak a foreign language. The Direct Method discards any use of mother tongue in the classroom. The Audio-Lingual Method involves auditory, visual and grammar-type learning activities.

  • 8.  “TESL” came out when English was expanding worldwide since it started to be used for trade.  Because of the importance of this language globally, in Panama, English has become the main tool, boosting the economy and tourism.  There are effective techniques that teachers can apply to improve students´ skills. CONCLUSIONS
  • 9. RECOMMENDATIONS • Students must be encouraged to the importance of the English language for their professional progress. • The teacher's duty is increasing his/her understanding looking for resources. • The teacher must remember that teaching a language is a process that requires patience and dedication.
