- I start with few words about IML “ Hej and a warm welcome to Umeå and our IML symposium. Hopefully, you had a good travel. I am and we are very happy that you are all here Before I say something about the symp in detail like structure and so on, I first want to give space to our Umeå university head the Vice-chanellor Lena Gustafsson and the head our our Dep of Ap. Edu Scc. Gunnar Schedin. Please, Prof Lena Gustafsson”
- “ Thank you very much for your really nice speeches and our welcome greetings. Thank you. As I mentioned before, I want to say something about this IML event.
- Umeå is also known as the city of the birches Because of a big fire Downtown in the 19 century where a lot of houses burnt down, birches are trees which have a lot of waTER inside And so, to prevent a big fire storm again, you can see birches everywhere
- Great nature AND where ever you are you have barbeque places -- in Swedish GRILLPLATSEN
- And, of course, and I am sure you already have seen it – the umeå river -- in Swedish it is Umeälven This photo is taken around Baggböle not far away from Umeå Downtown
- My first impression about Umeå university was It is a very good environment for doing research It gives inspirations By having socializing coffee breaks
- As I moved in April to Umeå, I started with a project called “taking a photo whenever I see something special what is different from “my” old cultures in Germany” Here I give you 2 examples This photo shows a chair in Umeå Downtown near by eh opera house where 2 people have a seat. The special thing is that FIRST it is heated in the winter, so you also can sit there when there is snow around you and SECOND, you have free wireless access to the internet. This kind of “social installation” has been made in 2002 by Mikael Richter.
- This is my favorite photo. My best argument for eLearning ? Without using any new technologies you don’t have access to public toilettes or restrooms. On this picutre, you see how to use your cell phone, You call an operator, s/he sends an SMS with a code to your cellphone and with that code you enter the door. This service costs 5 swedish krones
- OK, coming back to our symposium…. IML – Interactive Media and Learning – that is the name of one group at our Department – where different people from different disciplines work together on a more or less same topic called ICT M L – different disciplines are for example, Education, Computer Science, Math Education, Pedagogical subjects – all involved in teacher education --- and so on… And this is what we call an “extraordinary” relationship and gives us great challenges and potentials for the future but also some “things” what we have to handle and obstacles to overcome. Why IML? Why such an event? The idea is simple - we want to bring all current activities with regard to I M L together, we want to build bridges between our “islands” of research and teaching, and want to design our future and the future of IML. So, the best way to do this, is FIRST to make clear within the group what do we do and what do we want to do in the future and SECOND to ask experts (YOU) what do you think about our future ideas. So, now, WE are here…. And YOU are here, too. Again, we are very glad that you accept our invitation. I will describe the whole process later in detail. What I want to add is that this event - myself and my research included - has been inspired by a lot of people, some of you are here. Almost any of you did affect my research but in particularly, I would like to thank 2 people in detail First, “the big picture” and the involved method called SeeMe and workshops are created by Thomas Hermann (and Gila) ,and I did use a resided version of it Second, the “symposium idea itself” has been created during a talk with Gerhard Fischer Both - Thomas and Gerhard’s – as researchers and in their roles as mentors – did support me in the past 10 and 4 years and hopefully will do it also in the future Especially, I like your questions - often critical or such ones who pushed me reflecting my work…. Thanks that you are here.

George Siemens is from “Technology Enhanced Knowledge Research Institute” at Athabasca university, CA He is a researcher on - learning, networks, technology, analytics and visualization, openness, and organizational effectiveness in digital environments. He is the author of A) Knowing Knowledge, B) co-editor Handbook of Emerging Technologies for learning and C) Personal Learning Environments and Networks. Special - George S. has pioneered open connectivist courses that have included over 10,000 educators and students as participants. Siemens has maintained the elearnspace blog ELEARNSPACE.org for 11 years and www.connectivism.ca for 6 years.
