2. How to: record the fetal ductus venosus blood velocity in
the second half of pregnancy
Indication: hemodynamic evaluation, e.g. intrauterine
growth restriction and cardiac function
Machine settings: routine obstetric scan preset with
color Doppler velocity 30–40 cm/s, pulsed wave Doppler
velocity 80–100 cm/s, low filter (50–100 Hz) and pulsed
Doppler sample volume 2–5 mm
Ideal fetal lie: on back

3. 1. Identify the umbilical vein in either a sagittal or
transverse plane

4. 2. Tilt the probe so that it is in line with the direction of
blood flow through the DV, regardless of fetal lie
