4. Dividing Rebetiko History
Ilias Petropoulos has divided Rebetiko History in three different periods in
order for us to study each period separately.
• 1922-1932 -- The period dominated by items from the music of Smyrna.
• 1932-1942 – The classical period.
• 1942-1952 – The period of worldwide acceptance.

period of Rebetiko History
During the first period rebetiko is affected by Smyrna and generally
the East style. The immigrants from Minor Asia bring their own
music view, instruments and rebetiko is in its first step of forming.

Period of Rebetiko History
Concerning the second period, rebetiko is becoming more authentic
and the hoodlums of big cities express their feelings about life by
playing rebetiko music. The east instruments are now altered with
others.
7. 3rd
Period of Rebetiko History
In the third decade there is a significant change in rebetiko music.
Many music geniuses of those times show up and the sociopolitical
situation is really difficult.

Rebetiko music captures the emotional climate of Greece during
different periods of life. It is authentic, realistic and moving. As for
its role in our society, Rebetiko has contributed in the expression of
the working class –or proletariat- regarding important notions. It is
concidered the voice of the poor.
