in Barcelona. During the following 9½ months, half of
Spain was under anarchist control.
It was the first time that a
anarchist revolution succeeded.

Ernest Hemingway visited and was fascinated by the
freedom fighters.
George Orwell wrote a book about the revolution
without communists called “Homage to Catalonia.”
All over Europe, intellectuals supported the republican
side and many of them saw the Spanish Civil War as a
prelude to a bigger confrontation between dictatorships
and democracies.

In July 1939 the republicans lost the war.As a result, Spain
