Revision Techniques – Flash cards Genetic Diseases and Cloning
Learning Objectives To learn a new revision technique To practice summarising your learning Outcomes To produce flash cards on a particular given topic
What is a chromosome? In which part of a cell are chromosomes found? A chromosome is a long length of DNA that carries lots of genes What is a gene? A gene is the basic unit of inheritance and controls what an organism is like. Chromosomes are found in the nucleus of a cell How many chromosomes do we have in our body cells? Genes What is a clone? Human beings have 46 chromosomes in their body cells A clone is a genetically identical copy of an organism How many chromosomes do we get from each parent? A recessive gene is the “weaker” gene. It will not express itself when a dominant allele is present. What is a recessive gene? We get 23 chromosomes from each parent What is a dominant gene? A dominant gene (allele) is the one that expresses itself in an organism. It is the more “powerful” allele
What are flash cards? A card containing key points about a particular topic, issue, subject etc.
What do flash cards include? ,[object Object]

  • 14.
  • 15. Task – Create a set of flash cards on a topic from Genetics & Cloning Use the resources provided to find the information you need about your topic Read, then summarise that information Create flash cards about your topic You have 20 minutes to complete this task
  • 16. Example: create a set of flash-cards on the topic of Huntington’s Disease Your flash-cards might include information, in relation to your specific topic, about the following: Causes Symptoms Types of gene Genetic cross Embryo testing, particularly including ethical issues You may be able to create a flash card that includes all of these issues, or choose a number of them to concentrate on
  • 17. Share with the group Circulate around each table to see what other groups have produced
