The idea for the modern vacuum cleaner was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1908. While out on a walk, Axel Wenner-Gren, a Swedish businessman, caught sight of an awkward-looking machine in a shop window. ”If I could make this machine lighter and cheaper,” thought Wenner-Gren, ”I could sell one in every home.” The rest is history. Wenner-Gren went on to commission the manufacturing of the Lux 1vacuum cleaner. In 1919 he founded Elektrolux (at that time spelled with a k instead of c). Wenner-Gren was a visionary in many fields. Innovation: In 1921, Electrolux introduced the vacuum cleaner model V, the first vacuum cleaner on runners. This was the first household vacuum cleaner adapted for use in ordinary homes. In 1922, Baltzar von Platen and Carl Munters, submitted a degree project presenting their innovation of an absorption refrigerator. Wenner-Gren noticed the young engineers, and decided to hire them and commercialize the innovation. Sales: Wenner-Gren founded Electrolux around a door-to-door sales organization. This close consumer contact, provided insight into the consumers needs and desires. This is the foundation for Electrolux extensive consumer insight work. Electrolux had showrooms in the best downtown locations in over 30 markets by 1929. You could not buy our products in these showrooms, only look at them and book a time for a home visit where the product could be demonstrated. Electrolux marketing set an impact. Cars and motorbikes shaped like a vacuum cleaner was used to promote Electrolux, and the best artists were hired to develop advertisements. Design: As cars and trains had become streamlined, Axel Wenner-Gren also saw the value in bringing a similar sleek elegance to home appliances. In fact, he had personally tracked down the foremost industrial designers, so that life for Electrolux customers would not only be cleaner and easier, but also more attractive.
Electrolux history could roughly be divided into three eras: Wenner-Gren era – Electrolux operates internationally, but still a small player Acquisition era – Electrolux starts to grow intensely by acquisitions. Becomes conglomerate-like with diversified portfolio of brands and product offerings Modern era – Consolidation. Focus on core business. Creation of One Electrolux – a global consumer insight-driven company.
This is another way to describe the history of Electrolux. Electrolux used to be a typical manufacturing company. We developed and manufactured the products we wanted to, and then provided the consumers with them. But then, in the last decades, our reality has changed: Industry forces: • Supplier & retailer consolidation • Global brands & products • Increasingly global & regional scale benefits • Market polarization • Volatile raw-material prices • Low-cost area competition • More stringent environmental legislation Consumer trends: • Growing global middle class • Increasing scarcity of resources • Aging population & smaller families • Focus on health & well-being • Greater requirements for service & quality • More interest in food & interior decorating • Increasing brand significance • Internet – main source of information Today, global brands and rapid launches of new innovative products will be necessary to achieve a market-leading position. Other crucial factors include cost-efficient production and leveraging global economies of scale. To stay a global market leader, Electrolux made its transformation to being a consumer insight-driven company. The company focuses on innovative products that are thoughtfully designed, based on extensive consumer insight, to meet the real needs of consumers and professionals.
Electrolux has completed its transformation from a manufacturing company into an innovative, consumer-driven company with an organization built on a strong understanding of evolving consumer needs. The combination of innovative products and a strong brand in the premium segment with the ability to utilize the global strength and reach of the Group have equipped Electrolux with the best prerequisites ever for profitable growth.
Our foundation governs everything we do and how we treat each other. Such values characterize all great, global companies. But what sets Electrolux apart from other companies are the three core values. The people in the organization rely on their talent as well as the foundation and values to execute the strategy. The strategy is to focus on products&services, brand and cost. By executing the strategy we will fulfill our vision.
Our foundation governs all of us in Electrolux in everything we do and how we treat each other. The components of our foundation can be applied to anything from the relationship we have between colleagues to how the company conducts business. Respect & Diversity We are a team with diverse disciplines, functions, cultures and organizations. We promptly address any conflict or situation that may involve disrespectful behavior. We treat all individuals with kindness and fairness. Ethics & Integrity We are open, honest and fair in all relations internally and externally. We challenge the behavior and values of others – when they do not act in accordance with Electrolux business ethics. Safety & Sustainability We seek and encourage actions that contribute to a safe and sustainable environment. We are willing to compromise short term results in own unit for sustainable Group results.
The values remind us of what we need to focus on in order to reach our vision. They should inspire us to always do the right thing. They also form a common bond – uniting the aims of all people within our Electrolux family. Passion for Innovation Our customer is at the center for all innovation. We encourage innovation not only in products and services but also in processes, HR, management and business models. We are constantly looking to renew ourselves through new opportunities and new ways of going forward. We learn and get inspiration from each other. We encourage cross-functional teamwork and act with speed and flexibility. We are always open to new ideas and are not afraid of taking risks. We learn from our failures and share our successes. Customer obsession The wants, wishes and views of our customers guide our every action. We are curious about our customers and continuously aim to learn more about them and their needs. We keep our promises. We capture insights about and anticipate our customers’ future needs. We strive to create added value for our customers – in all aspects of work, ultimately aiming to deliver the best customer experience. Drive for results We strive for a visible, measurable and balanced benefit from everything we do. We focus on the essential and aim at simple, informal, lean and direct ways of doing things. We have a global view and our personal objectives and results reflect us being one company with one vision. We recognize and reward results that contribute to the greater good and the overall strategy. We emphasize long-term results, profitability and growth.
To maximize the work with innovation, three global functions—Brand & Marketing, Design and R&D—have joined forces and formed the Innovation Triangle Council (ITC).
The three functional heads MaryKay Kopf, Jan Brockmann and Stefano Marzano summarized the session about innovation.
All our product development and communication should be based on consumer insight. A consumer insight is a deep understanding of a consumer need. It is not simply the result of asking the consumer what they want. It is the result of synthesizing observations – asking consumers, observing them, listening, etc – to come to a deep understanding and pinpoint a need the consumer may not be aware of or may not be able to formulate. When we develop a product and the consumer says – ” Aha, how did you know that was what I needed?” – then we know we have succeeded.
Model V vacuum cleaner (1921) Previously, vacuum cleaners were bulky stand-up units and not easily portable. The Model V however was designed to lie on the floor on two thin metal runners. This innovation, conceived by Axel Wenner-Gren himself, became a standard feature on generations of future vacuum cleaners. In fact, after the Model V, all Electrolux vacuum cleaners were designed to lie on the floor. The model was such a resounding success that Swedish maids protested when it was launched, in fear of getting unemployed. Now, virtually anyone could clean the home, they argued. Assistent (1940) Semi-professional and heavy duty, the Assistent was launched in Sweden as a motorized kitchen helper. At the time it revolutionized food preparation. The sales argument was: “The Assistent saves money while making the most of the food a family has.” Between 1945 and 1949, the product was so popular there was a three-year waiting list. For people with muscular disabilities or arthritis, a doctor’s order could speed things up, however. L1 fridge (1930’s) The new air fridges used air to cool the ammonia, thereby making it much more flexible and independent of a source of water. By the late 1930s, a refrigerator had become a standard piece of equipment in most middle-class households. D 10 dishwasher (1959) This was not only Electrolux first dishwasher. It was also the world’s first countertop dishwasher, and could be installed in most modern kitchens at the time without the need for major kitchen renovation. Its nickname at the time was “the round tin.” The cylindrical unit could wash the dishes for a family of five in just six minutes. Luxomatic vacuum cleaners (1964) The Luxomatic Z 90 was the first of a new generation of vacuum cleaners that included features like a cord winder, self-sealing paper dust bags, and a dust indicator that showed when the bag was full – real innovations in other words. The greatest innovation was a rubber membrane on the paper bag that meant that once dust was sucked up it was never to be seen again. Before, dust had to be emptied by hand from cloth bags. ALC washing machines (1986) The Automatic Level Control System (ALC) made it possible for the washing machine to self regulate the amount of water it used depending on the size of the load. In so doing, water and energy consumption could be diminished by around 30%. The ALC became standard on all front loaded washing machines. ALC was also the first in a row of environmentally friendly innovations by the Electrolux Group. The Trilobite (2001) The Trilobite was the first automatic vacuum cleaner on the market. Measuring only 13 centimeters high and with a diameter of 35 centimeters, it could navigate under beds, tables, and other furniture. The “eyes” allowed it to navigate using sonar (acoustic radar that works with ultrasound), just like a bat. When the batteries ran low, Trilobite by itself returned to the charging station to recharge. Now: Ultra Clean washing machine Launched in Brazil, this washing machine has a stain-removal pen mounted directly on the machine. The feature issues ultrasound waves that, combined with water spouts and soap powder, eliminate the stains from the fibers of tissue. Keyhole Hob Based on consumer insight that tells us that Asian cuisine requires functions that facilitate stir-frying and deep-frying as well as the ability to cook at a controlled simmer. Gas is perfect for wok cooking and induction is perfect for soups that need to simmer. Keyhole Hob combines the best of two worlds. Ergorapido Consumer research showed that cleaning behavior had changed – consumers clean limited spaces instantly instead of large spaces on a regular basis. Therefore, Electrolux developed the Ergorapido – a combined handheld and upright vacuum cleaner that is battery driven and beautiful enough to leave outside the cabinet. The Ergorapido created an entirely new premium market segment for “instant cleaning”. Laundry products in North America The Electrolux-branded laundry products for the North American premium segment have great capacity, energy-efficiency and design. They have been well received and Electrolux today has strong market shares in this profitable segment.
A piaci-, fogyasztói lehetőségek beazonosítása Azon piaci lehetőségek vonatkozásában, amelyeket a stratégiai tervekben beazonosítottak, kiterjedt vevői közvélemény kutatást végeznek interjúk készítésével, a vevők otthonának felkeresésével és megbeszélésekkel. Termék menedzsment A termék teljes élettartamára vonatkozó ráncfelvarrás.
Számos hosszú távú trend is folytatódik.
Electrolux address two different types of consumers with different needs.
A position in the premium segment is a crucial in our strategy for profitable growth. The rapid emergence of a large global middle class generates increasing demand for products with innovative design under a well-known global brand. As one of the few global producers of household appliances, Electrolux has a clear competitive advantage. As household appliances are infrequent purchases, consumers have limited knowledge of market events since the last purchase. A strong brand constitutes a strong sales point. The Electrolux brand is positioned in the premium segment throughout the world. The Group also invests in strong, regional brands, such as Zanussi, Eureka and Frigidaire. Our connection to professional products is of increasing importance to Electrolux. Being the choice for the best professional users of kitchen appliances gives credibility to Electrolux innovations in consumer appliances. Electrolux is a global brand with Scandinavian values, an attribute that fills an important function in the creation of the products’ design and in the development of new, green and responsible products. Scandinavian design values – freedom, intuition, authenticity, comfort and simplicity – make the products more visible in the retailers’ stores.
Electrolux investments in brand communication have increased in conjunction with preparations for new, extensive product launches. In 2010, investment in the brand was 2% of the Group’s sales, which is roughly double the level some years ago. Some proofpoints of the result: Became No 1 brand in Brazil – Electrolux has a long history in Brazil, but on a small scale. In 1997, the Electrolux brand was introduced in major appliances in Brazil. Since then, Electrolux has managed to become the leading brand on the Brazilian market, by introducing differentiated products, and using innovative marketing efforts. NA launch - In 2008, Electrolux launched the largest marketing campaign in its history when reintroducing the Electrolux brand on the North American market. In 2009 and 2010, this was followed by a relaunch of the Frigidaire brand in the massmarket segment. Electrolux now has a strong brand position in North America. Vac from the Sea – This campaign should increase awareness worldwide concerning the lack of recycled plastic while increasing volumes of plastic debris are polluting the oceans. Plastic collected in the oceans was used to produce a set of vacuum cleaners. Electrolux Design Lab – Our annual global design competition open for design students from all over the world. The competition should help the students in their future careers as well as provide Electrolux with smart insight into future product design possibilities.
Innovating and promoting energy and water efficient products is the most important contribution Electrolux can do to reduce climate change. Our best refrigerator consumes 70% less energy compared to the average 15 years ago. The pattern is similar in other product categories. A consumer that buys a new efficient refrigerator, in only two years will save energy equal to the total impact of all the resources to manufacture, transport and recycle the refrigerator. Swapping old appliances, even those that still function, is good for the environment. Electrolux is raising awareness on the importance of energy-efficient appliances, for example through the web site www.electrolux.com/ecosavings , where consumers can calculate how much energy, water and money consumption as well as CO2 emissions could be reduced in their household, city and country, if all >10 years old appliances were changed to new ones. A 2009 target to reduce energy consumption in operations by 15% compared to 2005 levels has been exceeded. Electrolux formulated a new savings target to reduce energy use by 15% by 2012 compared with 2008 levels.
Most of the carbon impact on an appliance life cycle is in the user’s phase. That’s why replacing even functioning products, is most of the time justified from a sustainability point of view.
