2. Biography
David Siqueiros is an American photographer who does a range of
styles but he's mostly known for his pop art work and his work with Andy
Warhol which are a series of portraits. The photos that David takes all I
believe capture what the person is like and their inner selves. David is
similar to Andy Warhol with the use of bright and contrasting colors.
With David's work you can actually learn a lot about the person in the
photograph, as with the photo to the right of the large house behind
the people it portrays that they are wealthy and so with the colors of
countries behind the subjects. These photos are clearly edited on the
computer opposed to Andy Warhol’s style of using silk screening
although they both have a similar affect. Where as with Warhol the
backgrounds were mostly plain, David’s represent the person in a
unique way. Again the composition for his portrait pop art is very
simple and doesn’t show the full body. He doesn’t just create pop art
pieces of people, as you can see he has done landscapes which is a
unique way of seeing the world and also promotional material.

5. Bernice Steinbaum
This is a photograph of Bernice Steinbaum by David Siqueiros. In this photo
she’s in a natural pose but smiling. The composition of the photo is chest up
with her eyes on the line of the rule of thirds. The colours used in the
photograph are mainly black, white, blue and yellow all of which contrast
with what they are next to. Siqueiros says that black and white takes the
viewer “out of the realm of reality” and these colours and contrasts are
prominent through out his work. The black used creates a sense of shade
and reflects where the lighting on the subject is coming from, in this case
the light is from the left of her face, from our perspective the right. The
photograph reflects and emphasizes her bright personality with the bright
colours and vibrant big smile. There's the repetition in the colour blue as its
natural with her eye colour. There's also the repetition of her name in the
background making it a piece that is there to reflect this person and who
she is. In most portrait photographs the person has a very still look on their
face without a smile, but David’s work reflects the personality and emotion
of the person in the photograph, blue is a calming colour that draws in your
eyes and makes the woman look like somebody you could trust with a nice
personality. I think what's vital with pop art photography and is reflected in
this photograph is how the photographer portrays their personality through
the use of colour and how the subject is looking. The colours used are very
soothing, yet vibrant which all reflects her personality. There's a filter used
over the portrait of Bernice and most likely a texture filter. I really do like this
piece and think it really shows a lot about the person. I think that it’s a
good photography piece as the general rules are followed with a perfect
composition and use of colour with the lighting creating a good amount of
light and dark that contrasts. The use of the triangle created by what she's
wearing naturally draws the eye to there and then leads the eye up to the
face.
6. Sean & Chance
This is a photograph of Sean and Chance in the common
pop art style of David Siqueiros. This is a portrait of a father
and his daughter in a natural pose as she is about to kiss her
father. They are wearing quite casual clothes and both
wearing jewelry. The composition in this photo again is quite
simple and taken from around the stomach upwards. The
father and daughter instead of being in the center of the
photograph they are positioned to the right in line with the
points on the rule of thirds. This piece is completely black
and white other than the little girls pink nails and lips. The use
of the contrasting black and white of the subjects with the
addition of the little splashes of colour really creates a focal
point on the photograph along with the blacks of their hair.
The lighting looks as if its coming from above with the
shadows under the folds of his shirt and under the girls arm
and face. Again this photograph reflects the people in the
photograph and straight away you know that this is a
portrait of father and daughter and the love they share.
Once again there’s the repetition of their names in the
background making this piece a personal piece for them
and there also the repetition of the colours black and white.
By having the lips of the daughter red it puts the focal point
on them and really emphasizes them which signifies the
connection between them. The daughter is looking up to
her father which shows how he could be inspirational to her
and how he’s the father figure that the child should look up
to. There is a sense of movement in the photo as they have
been captured just before their lips meet and his lips are
pouted. There’s a filter over the two people but not he
background, its most likely a texture filter and adds a grainy
effect but still makes details on them clear and visible.
I think that pop art is about reflecting the personality of
the people through stance and colour. David Siqueiros
achieves this by creating a very personal piece to the
father and daughter showing the bond between them
and the emotions they share. The use of the triangle
created by the fathers arm on his leg naturally leads
the eye to there and creates a focus point. There's no
real importance to the photograph although to the
people in the photo it shows their emotions and how
close they are. I think the simple use of black and white
really works and overall it’s a good photograph.
7. Jorge Perez
This is a photograph of Jorge Perez who is an American
real estate developer and Author. He’s net worth $1.2
billion and this is clearly reflected in the way he is
dressed as he’s wearing what looks like an expensive
suit and posing in the photograph. This is also reflected
in the background and text over the background, this
reflects his career and also his wealth as he is clearly
wealthy through his role being C.E.O and President of
The Related Group. Again pop art I think reflects the
persons personality and who they are and this piece
clearly demonstrates this. The lighting in this
photograph is coming from the right of him and from
our perspective the left of the photograph and the
shade creates more deep blacks. Once again the
main colours used for the person in the portrait are
black and white which really contrast with each other
with the deep blacks, highly saturated and really
create a focal point in the piece contrasting with the
coloured bright background. The colours used for the
background are bright, urban colours which also
reflects Jorge Perez, his company has been at the
forefront of the urban revolution. Its taken from the top
of his legs upward from the angle at his level in front of
him. The photograph to the right, instead of being just
black and white colours are used for his face and tie
to reflect real life colours, but his blazer hair and rest of
his body are still black and white. His personality is also
reflected in the way he’s looking at the camera, he
looks quite serious but kind of intrigued, big and
imposing. His hands create a triangle shape which
eyes are naturally lead to then lead up his body and
to the face. What also creates a focal point and leads
eyes to the piece are the leading lines in-between
each photograph and section.
The background in this piece is in focus where as usually in portrait
photography the background is out of focus. This is because the
background reflects who the person is and is an important part of the
piece. Of course the background would have been edited in most
likely using software like Photoshop, this is evident as there are a
number of pieces that involve the same photograph but different
backgrounds. The background in this piece says “The Related Group
redefining cities and skylines Jorge M.Perez President and CEO” which
is repeated over the whole piece. I think that David Siqueiros through
this piece was trying to represent Jorge Perez and has achieved this
successfully. Through this photograph you can see that this person is
wealthy immediately, and the urban colours also represent who he is
and his career. The person in the photograph is quite influential at this
time in the real estate market so he and the photograph and the way
he is reflected is quite important.
8. My Versions: Kerry Sargent
With the original photograph of Bernice Steinbaum a important
feature of the photograph was the lighting to create the
contrast between black and white. This was what I wanted to
create in my own work with the light coming in from the left of
her. I wanted the subject to have the same pose and
composition as Bernice Steinbaum, in the original the pose and
smile was very natural which was what I wanted to portray and
believe I have achieved this successfully. I used the same colours
such as the bright yellow hair, and subtle but contrasting pink lips
that stand out from the white face. Because I couldn't’t get the
same clothing I made sure that, like the original there was
something in the composition that drew the eye to the
photograph. So in my photograph I used the big flower which
contrasts with the black dress and draws the eye to the
photograph. I put the subjects name in the background as it is in
the original which also creates some leading lines between each
line. It creates a background which doesn’t distract from the
subject but links in with the colour scheme and contrasts. I also
used the same texture over the body and face.
9. Father & Daughter
This photograph is very simplistic with only
black and white used as the main colours.
The only other colour used is the red of the
lips that on both photos, mine and the
original you can hardly see unless you focus
on the photograph. I got the same
composition with the father and daughter
and her hand on the face. I also made sure
that I got the triangle created by the fathers
arm as the eye is naturally drawn to triangles
which will then lead your eye upwards to the
face. Again I made sure I got the lighting
correct coming from above them to create
shadows between the creases of the
clothing. When editing the photograph and
adding in the colours I made sure that I used
the same colours and only made little details
colour like in the original, so the fathers collar
and end of his arm sleeve. I also added the
text in the background, with the text white
and background gray, this links in with the rest
of the colour scheme and doesn’t distract
from the main subject.
I also added the same texture to the photograph and
once again the text in the background creates leading
lines with the gap in between.
10. Tom Phillips
In this photograph one of the main features was the use of
colour and composition, also how the person is dressed.
Opposed to the other photographs this one uses colour for the
body and clothing. I made sure that the expression on the face
was serious and the angle of the photograph was looking
slightly upwards to him. I kept the hair black and white as it is in
the original. Instead of having all three colours in the
photograph I just used one colour for the background and kept
it simple as the subject hasn’t yet got a job and is only young,
although I still used his name for the background and the same
colour. The lighting I had coming in from the right of him to
create the shadow on his hand but also as he's looking towards
a different direction there’s shadows under his eyes.
