2. How it All Started
It started pretty simply. After the end to a significant
romantic relationship, like many, I turned to a little
soul searching to get better in touch with myself. I chose
to make a list, to list things I had wanted to do in life,
but for different reasons had not yet done. As I told
myself to think free from reason, a stream of consciousness
poured through my pen just long enough for me to list have
a nice little list.
The third item on my list after learn to scuba dive and
leave the country at least once a year (both of which I
have since done) was three short words: be an athlete.
Now, I likely hadn’t thought about playing sports or being
an athlete in decades. Not the most coordinated child I
had been cut from baseball, softball, soccer, track and
volleyball all before the eighth grade. The powers that be
had spoken; I could be many things in life, but not an
athlete.
Now in my thirties I had a conundrum on my hand. This
thought that appeared on my list without realizing it was
about to change my life…

15. Three simple words, ‘be an athlete’ that has
turned into so much more…
You see, this process has evolved to be so much
more than just fulfilling an unrequited childhood
desire. I’ve experienced a fundamental shift in
how I am able to tackle obstacles across all facets
of my life. I set bigger goals and truly now
believe anything I want for myself and my life is
possible through commitment, perseverance and
training.
Falling in love with multi-sport has filled my
life’s toolbox with an arsenal of outlets for
honoring my mind, body and spirit through
training while continuing to reinforce how to
breathe through fear into action.
Racing may not be appear to be anything more than
a glorified hobby, yet it has forever changed my
life. Whatever words appear on your list, know if
you can dream it, you have the power to make it
real.
