Introduction
Judy
Personal (from Henderson KY, my family, my nephew, my love for traveling – WDW, NOLA, Boston, Jamaica)
Education (attended Catholic school 12 years, Vandy BS, USI MS, more to come)
Experience (15 years in the same school I attended, 1 in 2nd grade, 10 in Kindergarten (full day, with aide), track coach, cheer coach, grant writing, enrollment committee)
How I got to this point? (End of year discussion with principal 4 years in a row; he finally said… you’re doing it… here’s where you’re doing it… here’s what I think you should do… etc. – then he jumped ship!)
Holly
Personal (1 of 5 children, parents/educations, husband, children, family activities)
Education (undergrad, masters, yearbook, math teacher)
Experience (19 years, social studies, math)
How I got to this point? (Judy said so. I’ve been rethinking that.)
GBL is hot topic
Interpreted differently
Research says
Article about gaming (video gaming, high tech) – GBL isn’t always that
Today’s Catholic Teacher Jan/Feb 2015 Edition
ASCD March 2015
Student empowerment, formative assessment, self reporting
Be prepared – students who are good at traditional school may be annoyed
Teach and reinforce skills
Collaboration, problem solving, creativity, and communication
Games as invisible assessments
Immediate feedback
Games vs gamification
Failure is rarely an obstacle when playing a game, makes it okay to fail in the classroom (willing to try things they might not normally do)
Marzano – using games showed 20 percentile point gain in achievement when used with purpose
Game points are not grades – grades are not the reward; outcome of game should not factor into grades
Bridges gap between what students place high value on and what we need them to learn
In our classroom
GBL is
Engaging learner w/out them realizing it
Used for review
Helps us differentiate
Gives students time to move, socialize,
Our students say all
1. Favorite - Parker and Ben
Why/like – Praislynn and Hannah
Why/play – Parker and Deborah
What/learn – Brook and Andrew
This is where that socialization comes into play
Taking turns
Following rules
Playing fairly
Self-monitoring
