Does everyone speak English? I didn’t translate my whole presentation yet...\nBTW - Halo is hello in Filipino\n\nI’m here to talk about Social Media as a creative Medium\n

Like porn, social media - Usually - requires more than 1 person.\nBut social media is just a tool. The new paradigms of group collaboration, sharing - and collection - of information, and a growing remix culture are what we should be paying attention to.\n
One such project that used online networks as a creative medium was “Rachel Is” - a performance in which the artist updated her facebook status every 60 seconds. \n\nThe collective sum of status updates painted an intense biography/diary and was a test of endurance. The work was part of an exhibition called “Status Update” (featuring Matt Held and An Xiao)\n\nhttp://blog.art21.org/2009/10/29/rachel-is-an-interview-with-rachel-perry-welty/\n
The following are 2 projects I worked on. Both projects encouraged a reinterpretation of the original performances and works.\n\nThe first one...\n
...was The Clytemnestra Project - which invited a global audience to remix and reinterpret classic Martha Graham choreography. I was hired to put the contest together.\n
The project started off with a media residency, where I taught a dance media course in residence with the Graham company. \nThe students blogged about Graham’s choreography and posted their interpretations of Graham’s Clytemnestra.\n\nThen, we opened the blog up to the rest of the world.\n
\n
Submissions were received from Europe, South America, North America, and Asia and received worldwide press. The company also gained direct insight into how their audiences interpret their work.\n
Dark Horse / Black Forest is a site specific performance that took place in the bathroom of the Gershwin Hotel in New York. It featured 2 different casts (Male + Female and Male + Male) and had an audience of 7 at one time.\n
There were many derivative works including: \n- fictional twitter feeds - pictured here, written by Rozalia Jovanovic\n\nThe feeds were the virtual lives of the characters in the piece\n\nand....\n
...an installation based on the twitter feed\n\nThe onsite installation took the two twitter feeds and converted them into actual spoken speech. By listening in, you could hear the dialog spoken.\n\n* We designed multiple “offsite” experiences, including a live webcast, and a video broadcasting to all the rooms.\n
Yanira Castro is no Martha Graham.\n\nBUT the performance was a source for multiple interpretations - including a Twitter feed - which allowed for the themes of intimacy, voyeurism, and participation to be explored in many ways by many people.\n
\n
Thank you, Marlon, Michal, Yanira, Janet Eilber from the Graham Company, and my love Amanda.\n
