2. Zionism born!
Zionism is Hebrew nationalism.
Since the Romans kicked the Jewish
people out of Israel in the second
century A.D., the Jewish people have
desired to go home.
Due to the rise of Zionism, the desire to
go home became huge in the 1800s.
When the British defeated the Ottoman
Empire in World War I, they announced
the Balfour Declaration, stating their
support for Jewish people and
Palestinians to both have homes in the
3. Because of the Holocaust
After World War II,
the United Nations
chose to divide
Palastine (modern
day name for the land
of Israel) into two
countries: Palestine
and Israel.
They would share
Jerusalem (ancient
capital of Israel).
Israel became a
country in 1948.
4. We all have bad neighbors….
The Palestinians
hated this idea and
developed their own
nationalistic ideas.
Right away, they
attacked Israel and
lost.
The Palestinians
fought Israel in 1948
and 1956.
Israel won both times
and claimed part of
what was to be the
5. Also Next Door……
The Suez Crisis in 1956 did not help things.
Egyptian President Nasser wanted to take over
the Suez Canal, built by the British. Britain
obviously wanted to keep it.
With support from Israel and France, Britain
beat the Egyptians, but America and the Soviet
Union made them give the canal to Egypt
anyway. Why?
6. Back to Israel….
The Palestinians did
not learn the lesson
from the first two
wars.
In 1964, Yasir Arafat
took over the
Palestinian
Liberation
Organization (PLO).
It is a terrorist
organization
supposedly
dedicated to creating
a Palestinian
7. Arafat’s Devious Plans….
Like a bad movie
villain, Arafat began
creating an alliance of
Israel’s enemies to
jump Israel.
Knowing it was
coming, though, the
Jewish people
attacked the PLO,
Egypt, Jordan, Syria,
and Iran and beat
them in the Six Day
War (1967).
A few years later,
Israel was attacked
again on Yom-Kippur
by the same group.
At first, the Arab
invaders were
winning but the
Israelis quickly
fought back.
The U.N.
orchestrated a
cease-fire officially
ending the fighting.
8. On to Camp David….
By this point, Egypt was
tired of being beaten by
tiny Israel.
At Camp David (an
American presidential
retreat), Israel and
Egypt signed the first
local peace treaty.
Egypt got the Sinai
Peninsula back and
accepted Israel’s right to
exist.
Because many Arabs
considered this a
betrayal, the Egyptian
president was soon
murdered.
9. The Intifada
In 1987, Palestinians
launched the Intifada (a
holy war) on Jewish
soldiers.
In 1993, the Oslo
Accords helped create a
degree of peace
between the PLO and
Israel.
Israel gave the
Palestinians land to
create their homeland
but Yitzhak Rabin (the
Jewish Prime Minister)
was killed by Jewish
10. Declaration of Human Rights
The 1948 Universal Declaration of
Human Rights was also developed as
a result of the major atrocities of
WWII.
◦ human rights standards for all nations
◦ Defined genocide (mass killings)
