Welcome...
I am miss J van schalkwyk.
a confidence and
satisfaction in oneself :
self-respect
According to psychologists, self-esteem
refers to a person’s self evaluation. How
every individual sees themselves,
whether it be important, smart,
worthwhile, or just the opposite of each
of those. They say healthy self-esteem is
not bragging, but knowing in your mind
that you have a lot of self-worth.
IMPORTANT WORDS TO REMEMBER

Self-concept: Picture or perception of ourselves/ a
person's mental model of his or her abilities and
attributes
Self Efficacy: The set of beliefs that one can
perform adequately in a particular situation.
Self confidence is assuredness in one’s
personal judgement and abilities.

Self efficacy refers to confidence
in one’s ability to carry
out a specific task.
Self-ideal: The way we would like to be
Self-actualization A concept in personality
psychology referring to a person's constant
striving to realize his or her potential and to
develop inherent talents and capabilities.
Self-awareness The top level of consciousness;
cognizance of the autobiographical character of
personally experienced events.
Grade 10 self-awareness, self-esteem, self development

Let us have a look at today's topic about how we perceive ourselves...
Today's lesson is about self-awareness, self-esteem, self development.
Self confidence results from 5 sources of
information:
1. Personal experiences, or things we have
done.
2. The experiences of others, or modeling.
3. Social comparison.
4. Social persuasion – the process of
convincing another person.
5. Emotional arousal – how you feel about
events around you and how you manage your
emotions.
SELF-AWARENESS
“Self-awareness” refers to the capacity to
become the object of
one’s own attention.
• It occurs when an organism focuses not on the
external
environment, but on the internal milieu;
• It becomes a reflective observer, processing
self-information.
• The organism becomes aware that it is
awake and actually experiencing specific
mental events, emitting behaviors,
and possessing unique characteristics.
SELF-AWARENESS CONT.
Self Awareness can be defined as the ability to perceive
one’s own
existence, including one’s own traits, feelings and
behaviors. It is a
personal understanding of the one’s own identity. It is
the basis for
many other human traits, such as accountability and
consciousness.
Self Awareness is empowering because it can reveal
where the
performance problems are and indicate what can be done
to improve
performance
Dr. Joe Rubinos high self-esteem brings out true self of your
child

Having low self-esteem can affect
your life in more ways than you can
possibly imagine. A low self-esteem
 means that you constantly doubt
your capabilities, you think very
poorly of yourself and you can never
put yourself to achieve your highest
potential.
Dr. Joe Rubinos high self-esteem brings out true self of your
child

Self Esteem understands that having a
low self-esteem can influence any child’s
personal growth and communication, as
well as the relationships that he or she will
share with other people.

It has been our ability to change and adapt that has made us
the most successful animals on the planet.
In times of need human beings have effected change in their
behaviour in order to save lives.
The radical changes of the 20th century have changed our lives so
profoundly that it is hard to imagine any other way of living.
MOREIMPORTANT WORDS

Self Esteem: Feelings we have about
ourselves
Self Esteem: A realistic respect for or favorable
impression of one self; Self respect
(Dictionary.com)
S esteem refers to a positive overall evaluation of oneself –
elf
a feeling that one is com
petent to cope with life’s challenges
and worthy of happiness

Self concept is what
we think about
ourselves

Self esteem is what
we feel about
ourselves
Although early life experiences have a major impact
on self-esteem, experiences in adult life also play a
role.
WHAT DO YOU UNDERSTAND BY SELF-ESTEEM?
Self + Esteem
The total, essential, or particular being of a person; the
individual: +Worth, Value, Opinion ,judgment

Self-esteem refers to the way we see and think about
ourselves
Self esteem is your opinion of yourself.
High self esteem is a good opinion of yourself and
low self esteem is a bad opinion of yourself.
SELF-ESTEEM IS NOT...

Self Esteem is NOT dependant
upon what other people think of
you
Self Esteem is not egotism,
arrogance,
narcissism/selfishness, or a
desire to feel superior to others
SELF-ESTEEM

●

So how do we measure selfesteem??????????
Most of us have an image of what low esteem
looks like, but is not always so easy to
recognize. Here are three common faces that
low self esteem may wear:
Impostor
Rebel
Loser
IMPOSTER

The impostor: pretends to be happy and successful, but is really
terrified of failure. Lives with the constant fear that she or he will
“found out”. Needs continuous success to maintain the mask of

positive self esteem, which may lead to problems with perfectionism,
competition and burnout
He acts as helpless and unable to cope with the world and waits
for someone to come to the rescue. Uses self pity or
indifferences as a guard against fear of taking responsibility for
changing his or her life.
Looks constantly to others for guidance which can lead to such
problems as lacking assertiveness skills, under- achievement,
and excessive reliance on others in relationship.
REBEL

He acts against the opinions or good will of others- especially
people who are important or powerful- don’t matter.

Lives with constant anger about not feeling “good enough”.
Continuously needs to prove that other’s judgment and

criticisms don’t hurt, which may lead to problems like blaming
others excessively, breaking rules and laws, or fighting
authority.
?????SELF-ESTEEM?????
Your self esteem depends on many questions:
Is your job worthwhile? Do others respect what you do? Do you?

Do you believe you are successful?

How do you see yourself (your self image)?
- Improve your self esteem
- Boost your self confidence
-
How do you feel about your strengths and weaknesses?

What do you think of your social status?

How do you relate to others?

Can you make your own decisions? A lack of choices leads to
low self esteem.
HOW DO WE DEVELOP SELF-ESTEEM?

A person develops his/her self esteem
throughout the life through experiences.
In this regard childhood experiences play
an important role in shaping self esteem.
Change
the bad

Appreciate
life

Leader
to
others

Good
Self
Esteem

Willing
to try
new things Believes
in
self

Accept
failure
Doesn’t submit
to
peer pressure
Is not
a threat
to others
IMPORTANCE OF A POSITIVE SELF-ESTEEM

Having a healthy self – esteem creates
confidence, self-reliance, and overall
happiness in an individual
Self esteem increases your confidence. If you have
confidence you will respect yourself and then you can
respect others, improve your relationships and
become happier....this is not a selfish goal as you will
contribute more and share yourself with the world and
those around you.
THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN HIGH AND LOW SELFESTEEM
High Self Esteem
If you are being praised
If you are listened to
If you are being spoken to respectfully
If you are getting attention
Experiencing success
Having trust worthy friends
Low Self Esteem
Experiencing Continuous Failure
Being expected to perfect all the time
Being Ignored or made fun of
Having physical or emotional punishment
Being criticized
No one can
Make you feel
inferior Without
your Consent.

Eleanor Roosevelt
Learn to be more assertive and not feel guilty
about saying no
Think positively
Believe on your self
Make plans for the future .Set and achieve
goals
Do something challenging each day
Look your best
Eat correctly
Do something for someone else
Learn a new skill
Emphasize your strengths.
Change what can be changed.
Some things fast, others gradual,
and others never. There are
things we inherit but we can
change our attitude about it. Try
new experiences.
Self-awareness helps you exploit your strengths and cope
with
your weakness. For instance, if you are someone who is
good at
“seeing the big picture “ that surrounds decisions, but not as
good at focusing on the details, you might want to consult
colleagues and subordinates that are more detailed- oriented
when making major decisions.
Co- operation between big- picture –oriented decisions
makers
and detailed- oriented decision makers can produce high
quality
decisions.
There are two different people in the
world. One that says “I wish I had” and
the one that says “I’m glad I did”.
Remember you can have anything in this
world if you just believe in yourself.
Accept yourself: Stop worrying about the
things you can’t change. Be more
accepting of others and the things they
can’t change.
Try not to compare with others. It’s unfair.
You may compare their strengths with
your weaknesses. Judge yourself in
terms of your own growth
