3. COLOUR SCHEME ONE
This is the first colour scheme that I have
constructed. When analysing my audience
research, I found that the primary colour
yellow was voted for once and therefore,
although I considered it for my colour
scheme, I will not be using this colour as it is
not iconic of the Classic Rock Genre.
COLOUR SCHEME TWO
This is the second colour scheme that I
constructed as two candidates stated that
this was a colour most associated with the
Classic Rock genre. I believe that the colour
purple is more commonly associated with
the Pop genre rather than the Classic Rock
genre.
4. COLOUR SCHEME THREE
COLOUR SCHEME FOUR
Only one candidate stated that gold was the
colour most associated with the Classic
Rock genre and therefore I will not be using
the colour for the colour scheme of my
magazine. However, I may consider using
this to enhance plugs or ears in order to
catch the audiences attention.
Only one candidate stated that blue was the
colour most associate with the Classic Rock
genre, however when researching the
Classic Rock genre, I was unaware of
Classic Rock magazines that featured the
primary colour blue and therefore, I will not
be using this colour for my colour scheme.
5. COLOUR SCHEME FIVE
This is the final colour scheme that I have
constructed. The primary colour red got
voted the most associated colour, along with
black and white, for the Classic Rock genre.
Therefore I will use these three colours
throughout the whole of my magazine in
order to maintain the ideology of the Classic
Rock genre.
7. In order to establish the name of my Classic Rock magazine, I
decided to research existing Classic Rock magazines, such as
NME, MOJO and Kerrang!.
Emap (now Bauer Media Group) wanted a title that they felt would
cater for the growing interest in the Classic Rock genre and
therefore stuck with the name MOJO. When I researched the
history behind the word MOJO, I found that it is a euphemism for
crack cocaine, although I don’t want to entice my audience to
begin drugs, this title conveys the stereotypical lifestyle of a rock
artist: drugs, sex, alcohol and no worries.
NME is an initialism of New Musical Express, and was first
published as The Accordion Times and Musical Express in 1949.
However, was changed to NME (New Musical Express) when a
London music promoter Maurice Kimm purchased the title for
£1000, just 15 minutes before it was due to close. NME is a
globally successful music magazine.
I was unable to locate information referring to the origin of
Kerrang!’s and when I typed ‘kerrang’ into the search box on
thesaurus.com, no results were found. However, the word kerrang
has connotations of rebelliousness of the rock and roll lifestyle.

8. FONT RESEARCH
Serif – I believe
this font would be
used for more
traditional and
professional
magazines such
as Q magazine.
As you can see, I have produced a table of the different styles of
fonts that are most common in modern day.
Sans Serif – This
font is more
commonly used
for magazines
such as NME,
which is within
my genre and
therefore I will
consider the
Sans Serif
typeface.
Decorative – This
font would be
more commonly
used for Classic
Rock magazines
such as Kerrang!
and therefore I
will consider
using this for the
front cover of my
magazine.
Block Serif –
Block Serif is
used more
commonly with
the Classic Rock
genre, therefore I
will consider
using this font for
the front cover of
my magazine.
9. To begin with, I needed to establish the
name of my institution. In order to do
this I accessed a website called
thesaurus.com and searched the word
‘rock’. Many definitions and suggestions
appeared however, when scrolling
through the suggested synonyms, the
word ‘shake’ appeared (next slide). I
believe the word ‘rock’ is a suitable
name for the institution of my magazine
as my magazine is a Classic Rock
magazine. By calling my magazine
‘rock’ the audience will easily
understand the genre of my magazine,
therefore making my product easily
recognisable and memorable for my
target audience. I have also stuck with
the idea of the sans serif font face in
order to support the conventions of the
Classic Rock genre. These fonts are
suitable for my Classic Rock magazine
as they connote the rock star lifestyle as
they are reckless fonts that look
effortless.
NAME IDEAS…
The font of the right is a rebellious font,
which is the overall theme of my product
however I feel this font is big or bold
enough in order to catch the audiences
eye. When it comes to my digital mock-
ups, I will trial these fonts in order to
establish which is the most effective font.
10. I searched the word ‘rock’ and the word
‘shake’ was suggested on page four. I
decided that ‘shake’ is a good name for
the institution of my magazine, this is
due to the connotations associated with
the word. I have chosen to preview the
word ‘shake’ in a sans serif font face in
order to make my masthead stand out
the audience. These are three fonts
that I felt support the Classic Rock
genre. When looking at existing Classic
Rock magazines such as NME, MOJO
and Kerrang, I have noticed that they
all feature bold, san serifs fonts that
are eye-catching for the audience. I will
follow this convention in order to make
my magazine a successful product for
the Classic Rock magazine market.
NAME IDEAS…
11. NAME IDEAS…
Next I thought of words that I, myself
associated with the genre Classic
Rock; the word ‘master’ came straight
to mind. I entered dictionary.com which
gave me an idea of the meaning
behind the word ‘master’. Here are the
multiple meanings I found when I
searched the word:
• a person with the ability or power to
use, control or dispose of
• an owner of an animal
• an employer of workers or servants
• the male head of a household
As you can see, one of the definitions
is ‘a person with the ability or power to
use, control or dispose of’ this supports
the rebellious rock and roll lifestyle as
the artists are in control and are able to
pick and choose whatever they like,
when they like.
I have chosen to use 1001fonts.com,
this allowed me to establish the
different fonts available to me.
Here are two fonts that I have used for the
presentation of my masthead. I have used the
font on the right for all of my trial mastheads as
it is a reckless font face that connotes the
rebellious lifestyle.
To conclude, I have chosen to use
a sans serif font that features on
Powerpoint software: Ariel Black.
This is a similar font to the Classic
Rock magazine NME and MOJO
therefore supporting the Classic
Rock genre.
13. FEATURE STORY IDEAS…
In order to establish the feature stories on the front cover
of my magazine, I asked the audience what their
favourite artist/band under the Classic Rock genre is. The
results are:
• Five candidates chose The Red Hot Chili Peppers
• Four candidates chose Bon Jovi
• Three candidates chose Led Zeppelin
• Three candidates chose Nirvana
• Three candidates chose Queen
• Two candidates chose ACDC
• Two candidates chose Black Sabbath
• One candidate chose Rainbow
• One candidate chose Aerosmith
• One candidate chose Bryan Adams
• One candidate chose Slipknot
• One candidate chose The Beatles
• One candidate chose Jack White
• One candidate chose Flock
• One candidate chose Metallica
• One candidate chose Alice Cooper
• One candidates chose CCR
• One candidate chose Marilyn Manson
• One candidate chose Kings of Leon
• One candidate chose Sock
• One candidate chose The Guess Who
• One candidate chose Motorhead
• One candidate chose Guns 'n' Roses
As you can see, the majority
of my audience answered
that The Red Hot Chili
Peppers was their favourite
band under the Classic Rock
genre. Therefore, I decided
that Red Hot Chili Peppers
will definitely feature on the
front cover of my magazine.
Bon Jovi will also feature on
my magazine front cover as
a featured storyline. By
including artists that my
target audience chose, this
addresses my audience as
they specifically stated that
they associate this artist with
this genre.
