5. • Use technology all the time whether it makes
sense or not. #sarcasm
• You make great decisions to improve things for
your students every day (e.g. attend SLATE!)

• PowerPoint
• Technology will solve all of our
problems

7. • Civil War Project
• PowerPoint
• Technology will solve all of our
problems
• Moose of her people.
8. Three Questions
• What do I want to teach?
(based on standards,
essential questions,
curriculum, etc.)
• How do I want to teach it?
(best practices, etc.)
• What technology exists to
help me meet my goals?
9. My Roles
• Help you answer third question:
“What technology exists to help me
meet my goals?”
• Opportunity: think expansively
about using technology to engage,
differentiate, encourage inquiry.
20. Scenario 5
• Your science teacher asks the class to
exchange papers to correct last night’s
homework. Your friend, Jamie, refuses to do
so and is sent to the principal
21.
22. NO VIOLATION
• In Owasso Independent School District v. Falvo
(2001), The Supreme Court ruled that peer
grading of student papers is not a violation of
personal liberty or of privacy
23. Scenario 6
• Jesse, a fourteen-year old student, decides to protest
the war in Iraq. He wears a T- shirt to school with a
picture of the White House and the caption “Weapon
of Massive Misinformation” His principal pulls Jesse
aside and asks him not to wear the shirt again
because it is disruptive to the learning environment.
Jesse wears it the next week and is suspended from
school for three days.
24.
25. ???????
• In Tinker v. Des Moines (1969), the Supreme Court
ruled that students have the right to wear politically
expressive clothing to school. However, in recent
years the lower courts have issued a variety of
opinions, some of which upheld student dress codes
while other courts have greatly limited the power of
the schools to regulate students’ expressive speech
(e.g., clothing)
26. Student Reactions
• I can take out my phone?
• Is this entrapment? Are you going to take it?
• Me: “You must use it for good. Appropriate
time, appropriate place, appropriate use.”
• Her: “I don’t like using my phone for learning
because I think of my phone for, like, fun stuff.”
27. • Backchannel
• Feedback
• Content display
• Extend the reach
of the classroom
28. Backchannel
• What is it?
• What are the benefits?
• Ask, answer, share links
• Learning community
• (are you OK with wikipedia?)
• Stephanie
29. Feedback

• “Do you feel prepared for the
test?”
• Self-assessment. Created their
own plans.
• “What should we be doing more
of? Less of?”
• Brought out issues I didn’t know
about and had to address.
• “You can say that again, Jon.”
30. Extend the reach of school
• Each of four presidential/vice-presidential
debates
• 6 hours! 705 comments
• “Are we gonna’ chat on election night?”
• Confident because of behavior and maturity
• #eduelection (with your parents’ permission)
31. Edmodo

• Feedback online in
comments or
annotate directly on
the document
46. • Screen capture
• Picture in picture
• Editing
• Music to start and end
• Call outs to add information
after recording
47. • “I like the videos much more. They clarify any vocabulary that I'm stuck on and
answer questions that I might have.”
• “Watching the videos online helped me better understand the content we were
learning.”
• “I liked how the videos make it easier to
understand some of the vocabulary and go more in depth on the vocabulary.”
• “I’m glad we’re back to watching your videos.”
• “Your videos help explain what’s going on.”
48. “I like how you can pause the videos so you can take notes on pause
then resume watching after you have written stuff down.”
“Watching the videos helps clarify and explain the information we are
learning in the chapter.”
“I like that the videos are directly from you and have a good
explanation. I also like that I can watch the videos on my own time, it is
also nice to be able to pause and rewind the videos.”
• “I’m glad we’re back to watching your videos.”
• “Your videos help explain what’s going on.”

way to show what I have learned about citizenship”. Once I
figured out a way, I realized that I had to think about all of the
things that are part of citizenship.”
• “some questions i asked about myself is what do i already
know about citizenship and what more can i learn about it.”
• “I asked who and what kind of citizens are active citizens. I
also asked what holds our rights and privlages intact. I

The timer is initiated by clicking on, at which point the circle will fill up in a clockwise direction with the colour you see above. At the end of the time, a bell will sound. It is possible to change the timings of the timers by entering the animation settings and changing the timings of the relevant ‘Oval’. Note the timings have to be entered in seconds. It is possible to have multiple timers on the same slide as these work independently of each other.

This slide’s video may not work if I run out of bandwidth on screencast.com Check out the link to it at bit.ly/mrbretzmann
This slide and the next two were edited (i.e. squished) to show the different call-out and highlighting options. As a result, the audio doesn’t match up for the next two slides. bit.ly/mrbretzmann has the actual videos.
