St. Mary’s Medical Center
First St. Cancer Center
Duluth, Minnesota
Principal in Charge
Healthy Building Consultant
Oversaw the design and construction
teams to help implement an aggressive
healthy building/LEED and
sustainability program for a new cancer
center in northern Minnesota.
SMDC is the first health care
organization in Minnesota — and

clinic using the LEED Green Building
Rating System, a nationally accepted
benchmark for the design, construction,
and operation of high performance,
healthy buildings.
Our holistic approach to healthy
building design included a view that
healthy IEQ = healthy patients. To that
end, the design construction process
included avoiding the use of PVC,
no/low-VOC and no-formaldehyde
materials and finishes, high-efficiency
air filtration, and superior daylighting
and views for patients and staff.

“Making a living is important;
sooner or later it becomes more
important to make a difference”
“We cannot rest on our past
accomplishments to realize the
change we need to have.
I believe many people around the
world are working together, using old
and new collaborative behaviors, to
help us transcend the climate and energy challenges we are facing”
