Deutsche Bank “Green
Towers”
Frankfurt, Germany

Principal in Charge
Sustainability Consultant

Complete renovation of the “twin
towers” to meet the worlds highest
sustainable design standards.

Rocky Mountain Institute provided
energy modeling, daylighting design,
lighting design, material consulting and
LEED advisor and reviewer support.

Project will achieve the highest ratings
with LEED, BREEAM, and the new
German Green Building Standard
(DGNB).

These “green towers” will achieve over
55% carbon reduction (from prior
usage), 50% energy savings, 67%
heating savings, 98% demolition
material recycled, and 74% water
savings amongst many other
sustainability metrics (fact sheet).
Scheduled for completion in late 2010.

Framework for a
“Living City Block”
Urban ReVision

oversee the development of a written
framework for a “living city block”.

Designed, led and facilitated a workshop
of over 40 diverse leaders to help inform

City of Cambridge Energy
Innovation Workshop
Cambridge, Massachusetts

Principal in Charge
Community Energy Consultant

Worked with Kendall / Barr
Foundations ,Cambridge Energy
Alliance, and MIT/Harvard
professionals to design and facilitate a 3-
day community –scale energy
innovation workshop.

Workshop was designed to develop the
leading ideas to help drive a 50-
megawatt peak load reduction in
Cambridge’ energy use. Invited 60
leading individuals in the energy field
from around the US to participate in the
workshop. Cambridge has made
significant progress from this effort.

St. Mary’s Medical Center
First St. Cancer Center
Duluth, Minnesota

Principal in Charge
Healthy Building Consultant
Oversaw the design and construction
teams to help implement an aggressive
healthy building/LEED and
sustainability program for a new cancer
center in northern Minnesota.

SMDC is the first health care
organization in Minnesota — and
among the first 10 in the United States
— to certify their 250,000 square foot
clinic using the LEED Green Building
Rating System, a nationally accepted
benchmark for the design, construction,
and operation of high performance,
healthy buildings.

Our holistic approach to healthy
building design included a view that
healthy IEQ = healthy patients. To that
end, the design construction process
included avoiding the use of PVC,
no/low-VOC and no-formaldehyde
materials and finishes, high-efficiency
air filtration, and superior daylighting
and views for patients and staff.
                                                                         2

Accelerating Campus
Climate Initiatives
USA

Principal in Charge
Team Member / Investigator

Working with the Association for the
Advancement of Sustainability in
Higher Education (AASHE), RMI built
on foundational research published by
various sustainability professionals at
universities and the National Wildlife
Federation’s growing Low-Carbon
Campus Series.

Visits to 12 campuses, of varying sizes
and types, revealed stories about barriers
and solutions to inform our research.

A 3-day workshop with participants
from each of the campuses visited,
informed findings, which were
published as a web-based framework for
whole-system climate action in campus
operations.

over $100 Million USD in construction

                                           My Core Philosophy

                                           “Making a living is important;
sooner or later it becomes more
                                           important to make a difference”

“We cannot rest on our past
                                           accomplishments to realize the
                                           change we need to have.
I believe many people around the
world are working together, using old
                                           and new collaborative behaviors, to
help us transcend the climate and energy challenges we are facing”
                                                                                             -James Scott Brew

                                                                                                                 5
