                           Introduction
The Meteorological and Hidrological Weather Service (SENAMHI) is the official
institution to give forecasts and weather warning in Perù.

SENAMHI for its activities needs many information coming with the aid of the
World Weather Organization (WMO) and other national and international
institutions like NOAA.

The data and products coming from NOAA let achieve its functions such as helping
to broadcasting data, getting satellite data and pictures, numerical model prediction
data, climate outlooks and other predictions products among others.

Another important contribution is the training programs,            conferences and
workshops that organizes and sponsoring.

Retrieve NOAA data and Products
SENAMHI retrieves NOAA data by several ways

   •   Internet (ftp,telnet and Internet Explorer browser)
   •   Marta Systems’ Direct-Readout Ground Stations and GVAR satellite
       receiver of GOES 12
   •   SUTRON GOES satellite Digital Direct Readout Ground Station (DDRGS)
       (updating to SIAP MICROS)
   •   Corobor ISCS Antenna and Messir Vision satellite data distribution system
       operated by WAFS/ISCS.
   •   Local Provider of Satellite Digital Images




Uses of NOAA products and services
By Internet SENAMHI is a user of gridded data of GFS numerical model from
National Operational Model Archive and Distribution System (NOMADS), National
Climatic Data Center (NCDC) and National Center for Environmental Prediction
(NCEP) of following data:

GFS 1x1 (rotating), GFS 0.5x0.5 (rotating) grib2, GFS Low Resolution (2 month
archive), Reanalysis-2 pressure level, SST (Reynolds), OLR(NCDC), SST (NCDC),
GFS (grib files of NCEP)

SENAMHI uses also Sea Surface Data and Products from Pacific Marine
Environmental Laborarory of TAO/TRITON, climate prediction products of
Climate Prediction Center for El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) Diagnostic
Discussion, and Monthly Atmospheric and SST Indices.

Atmospheric Variables from NCEP or NCAR (National Center for Atmospheric
Research )/NCEP

Satellite pictures of GOES 10 from Centro de Previsão de Tempo e Estudos
Climáticos-CPTEC (Brasil), Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite
Studies (CIMMS) and Cooperative Institue for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA)/
Regional and Mesoscale Meteorology Branch (RAMM)

By Marta Systems’ Direct-Readout Ground Station is a user of GOES 12 satellite
pictures with GVAR receiver

By SUTRON GOES satellite Digital Direct Readout Ground Station is an
International User of Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)
Data Collection System (DCS). The use of GOES DCS is for monitoring
meteorological, hidrological and oceanic parameters through Data Colection
Plataforms (DCP`s)

By ISCS Anntena and Corobor Messir Vision satellite is user of WAFS/ISCS data
   for GFS numerical model products and meteorological data.

   By Local Provider SENAMHI is user of NOAA satelite pictures

   In another hand NOAA through NCEP is giving training course to SENAMHI`s
   forecasters in the Sudamerican Desk. Whith this course SENAMHI is improving
   the capability to make forecasts.

   The conferences and worshops sponored by NOAA help to better understaning the




         Products and services of SENAMHI
             produced with NOAA data
       1. Weather forecasting.- The meteorological data, numerical model (GFS) data
          and products and satellite pictures of NOAA (GOES 10 and GOES 12) is
          used to make public weather forecasts twice a day, serving to all country.
       2. Numerical Weather Prediction.- The numerical data of GFS lets to run their
          own SENAMHI Eta model.
       3. Weather Warning.- The meteorological data, numerical weather prediction
          products and satellite pictures of NOAA is used to make Weather Warning
          to Civil Defense Institution to risk disaster management.
       4. Climate Prediction.- The meteorogical and oceanic data and numerical
          model products of NOAA aid to make Climate forecast for differents users
          such as Agriculture, Industry, Health and Water Management, also these
          products are used to monitoring and forecast El Niño/La Niña event.
       5. Hidrological, Environmental and Agrometeorological prediction uses also
          numerical model products, satellite data (GOES 12, GOES 10).
       6. Research.- The GOES and NOAA satellite pictures are used in research to
          estimate rainfall, radiation, glacier area, NDVI index among others.

All these products are issued in the SENAMHI`s web page http://www.senamhi.gob.pe
and http://wwis.inm.es/029/m029.htm

We must say that NOAA data ad information is a great contribution to Global Earth
Observation System of Systems (GEOSS).
This information as a basis for the products and services of SENAMHI deliver and will
enhance the benefits to society in such crucial areas as disaster warnings, human health,
energy, water-resource management, weather and climate variability monitoring,
ecosystems, agriculture, and biodiversity.

Future and Recomendation to NOAA
                 Direct Readout data
Peru has been incorporated as member of GEOSS, in this sense SENAMHI is going to
adquire EUMETCAST system to recieve data and products through this system at near
future.

SENAMHI recommends more training programs in GOES and POES satellite.

It will desirable if NOAA can help to provide some advice to use satellite data and
products such us ATOVS data to improve the local numerical model.

Research.- The GOES and NOAA satellite pictures are used in research to estimate rainfall, radiation, glacier area, NDVI index among others. All these products are issued in the SENAMHI`s web page http://www.senamhi.gob.pe and http://wwis.inm.es/029/m029.htm We must say that NOAA data ad information is a great contribution to Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS). This information as a basis for the products and services of SENAMHI deliver and will enhance the benefits to society in such crucial areas as disaster warnings, human health, energy, water-resource management, weather and climate variability monitoring, ecosystems, agriculture, and biodiversity. 4

Future and Recomendation to NOAA Direct Readout data Peru has been incorporated as member of GEOSS, in this sense SENAMHI is going to adquire EUMETCAST system to recieve data and products through this system at near future. SENAMHI recommends more training programs in GOES and POES satellite. It will desirable if NOAA can help to provide some advice to use satellite data and products such us ATOVS data to improve the local numerical model.
