      President Marie called the meeting to order,
asking Jeff Chin to lead us in the Pledge of
Allegiance. Dennis Prefontaine offered an
invocation, seeking resolution of the nation’s
health care debate. Susanne McInerney led us
in a chorus of God Bless America, noting that
royalties from the Irving Berlin song were do-
nated by singer Kate Smith to the Boy Scouts of
America.

     Bill Garr reported that only 15 Rotarians
were present today, then introduced our guests:

twenty clubs decorated and submitted frogs to the
competition.

Right: Frog impersonator! Sesame Street fans will
instantly recognize that the green creature is not a frog -
it’s a grouch named Oscar. But the culprit is really
Brookline’s Ken Jaffe, shown apparently confessing to
local authorities.

                       Robin Longendyke, The Salvation Army

      Robin Longendyke, field Representative
for the Salvation Army, works in their Canton,
MA office. She spoke briefly about the history of
the Salvation Army, starting with its creation as a
break-away component of the Methodist Church
in England. The original leadership opened a
soup kitchen in London in the late nineteenth
century.
      Today, the Salvation Army exists in 119
countries, including Haiti, where two of their
three buildings in Port-au-Prince were destroyed
by earthquake. Luckily the building left standing

Student of the Month: Lea Chilazi

       Newton Country Day School of the
  Sacred Heart, Director of Campus Ministry,
  Ryan Murphy, gushed with praise for our
  Student of the Minth award recipient, Lea
  Chilazi. He noted her “genuine warmth and
  infectious humor.”
       Lea is a junior this year, and recalled
  making different choices after an uninspired
  freshman year. As a sophomore, she joined the
  Amnesty International Committee at school,
  discovering “I cared very much about every-
  one being treated equally.” She also spent one

                                                  Sitting in the same chair as he did last week,

  • 4. Speaker/Program: Robin Longendyke, The Salvation Army Robin Longendyke, field Representative for the Salvation Army, works in their Canton, MA office. She spoke briefly about the history of the Salvation Army, starting with its creation as a break-away component of the Methodist Church in England. The original leadership opened a soup kitchen in London in the late nineteenth century. Today, the Salvation Army exists in 119 countries, including Haiti, where two of their three buildings in Port-au-Prince were destroyed by earthquake. Luckily the building left standing was the orphanage, which suddenly went from L to R: Barbara Sydney, Salvation Army volunteer, 52 to over 300 orphans in one week. Now they President Marie Presti, and Salvation Army Field Rep Robin Longendyke are working in Chile, as well, with volunteers providing local emergency help. Student of the Month: Lea Chilazi Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart Student-of-the-Month Lea Chilazi (R) accepts congratulations fromPresident Marie Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart, Director of Campus Ministry, Ryan Murphy, gushed with praise for our Student of the Minth award recipient, Lea Chilazi. He noted her “genuine warmth and infectious humor.” Lea is a junior this year, and recalled making different choices after an uninspired freshman year. As a sophomore, she joined the Amnesty International Committee at school, discovering “I cared very much about every- one being treated equally.” She also spent one summer working for Habitat for Humanity in L to R: Ed Casavant, Sylvia Chilazi, Marie Presti, Lea Connecticut.
