29. Violence against women
happens in all cultures
and religions, in all ethnic
and racial communities,
at every age, and in
every income group.
However, some women
are especially at risk:
30. A woman or child in Canada is
being sexually assaulted, every
minute of every day…
51% of women in Canada over the
age of 16 have experienced at least
one form of
men’s violence against women…
31. Females under age of 25 are most
at risk of sexual assault and
criminal harassment.
For women with disabilities, 60%
will be sexually assaulted during
their lifetime.
32. In the past 10 years, more than 600 Aboriginal
Women have been murdered, are currently
missing or feared dead...
33. By the age of 12,
1 in 4 girls will
experience
street
harassment in
the form of
unwanted
attention in
public.
By the age of 19
that number is
nearly 90
percent.

143. Guiding Principles: Gender is Relational
Men’s violence against women is neither exclusively a
women’s issue, nor a men’s issue, but it is a society wide
issue
Consequently, work with men
and boys must be gender
transformative; including
discussions and critical debate
about gender norms and how
these influence social norms,
attitudes, and behaviours

144. The fundamental
question has shifted
from “why” we
should work with
men and boys, to
“how” we work

146. White Ribbon Campaign (WRC) Issue Brief:
Engaging Men and Boys to Reduce and Prevent Gender-Based Violence.
1. Work with men and boys is necessary.
As perpetrators, the target audience for
primary prevention, holders of the social
norms and influencers on other men,
men must to be engaged to reduce and
prevent gender-based

2. Work with men and boys can be
effective.
As the evidence base grows, evaluation
data appears, lessons are learned, and
best practices are shared, we know this
may be the missing compliment to past
decades of work.

148. White Ribbon Campaign (WRC) Issue Brief:
Engaging Men and Boys to Reduce and Prevent Gender-Based Violence.
3. Work with men and boys can be positive.
There is a much broader spectrum of positive
roles for men and boys to play than perpetrator
or potential perpetrator of gender-based
violence. These roles not only prevent and
reduce violence against women and promote
gender equality, but also improve the lives of
men and boys by freeing them from these
harmful and limiting aspects of masculinities.

• Strength Campaign: Men respond
better to being shown the “right” way to
do things than being scolded about the
“wrong” ways, start by locating and
valuing what men are already doing right
• Focus on what is strong in men and not
what is wrong with them, demonstrate
positive examples of masculinity and
promote gender equitable lifestyles,
rather than highlight only the negative,
violent or predatory behaviours of men

As you can see some of the boys pointed out pressing pet peeves like how ‘boys smell bad’ or ‘grow hair everywhere’. With some of these answers, however, the boys go deeper. Many usually share thoughts such as how they don’t like that boys get very competitive, leading to aggressive behaviour or cheating to be labelled a ‘winner’. In all respects, it is all about being a winner for boys, sometimes at all costs. Some will talk about how boys always are in trouble, as one boy indicated here with ‘…an automatic bad reputation’.The item on this list which stood out to me that day was the first one: ‘not being able to be a mother’. I asked the student to explain what he meant. A small, articulate Grade 4 boy stood to talk and put his palms on the table, the same boy who said he wanted to ‘be a politician when I grow up’.“Did you mean that you can’t give birth since you are a boy?” I asked. Usually one of the standard responses from boys of all ages during this exercise is how they like that ‘we don’t have to give birth’. He explained that he thought of it after watching the mash-up exercise which included video of a girl’s commercial for a ‘Baby Alive’ doll. He shared his thoughts on how ‘boys aren’t shown playing with babies’ and aren’t encouraged to raise children. I told him “…but, you could be a father?!? That’s what you could be?!!” he looked at me like I was crazy! My mind raced as I wondered just how many of these fifty boys were raised by emotionally-present fathers (those who had present fathers) who did a bit more than throw the ball around.
Idea of manhood then
Idea of Manhood today
Man and ability, concept of manhood tied so much into ability and strength…what if you’re a man with a ‘disability?’ are you still a man?
